Køge Marina
Hundige Harbour
Make harbour
in Greve and Køge
The harbours on Køge Bay provide great atmos -
phere to yachtsmen and everyone else who
enjoys the twinkling of the sun in the water in the
morning. Here is always room for visiting boats,
navigation is easy and, in addition, there is a host
of urban and scenic activities to choose from.
Mosede Harbour
Mosede Harbour functions as a yacht and fishing
harbour. The local fishermen are pound netting
off shore, catching cod, silver eel and garfish.
Late in the morning of practically every day of
the year, you can watch the boats entering the
harbour, enabling the public to buy fresh fish
direct on the pier or from the fishmongers/
smokehouses on the harbour.
Mosede Harbour is also home to a diving club, a
rowing and kayak club as well as a sailing club.
Hundige Harbour
A modern, all-round yacht harbour with a
genuine marina atmosphere and beautiful
surroundings is what meets the eye in Hundige
Harbour whether you arrive by land or by
sea. Hundige Harbour is located in continuation
of the Beach Park (Strandparken), a
recreational area offering family friendly
bathing facilities and a wonderful sandy
beach. Hundige Harbour participates in the
free port arrangement and has mooring space
for small sailboats as well as sophisticated
yachts.
Hundige Harbour is an excellent base for visiting
Portalen Concert and Culture House and
Waves Shopping Centre with 110 specialist
shops.
Køge Marina
Køge Marina is a coveted tour destination for
local yachtsmen as well as local and outside
visitors who may be on the way to the northern
beach (Køge Nordstrand), buying an icecream
and watching the boats. Up to 10,000 visitors
can be seen here over a fine weather summer
weekend, and there are two eating places to
appease their hunger, the Arken Restaurant
and the Cafesito.
Kjøge Mini-Town
Great
experiences
for everyone
Should the weather not be suit able for a beach
trip, it is good to know that the cultur al scene
has great experiences in store for you.
Children and adults can imagine how a giant
would feel visiting Kjøge Mini-Town, which is
under constant construction on the eastern
outskirts of town.
Here you can study Køge as it looked in 1865
on a scale of 1 to 10, and it is also possible to
watch work in progress in the Mini-Town's
workshops.
The cultural history museums of Greve and
Køge relate the region's history in two beautiful
old buildings.
Køge Museum is located in the centre of town,
and among its many exhibits is Denmark's larg -
est silver treasure, which was uncovered in 1987
in Brogade. (Please note that Køge Museum is
closed from April to the end of the year).
Køge and Greve Museum both hold unique
collections of textiles.
Greve Museum is accommodated in a beautiful
old Hedebo farmhouse from 1826 set in a lovely
garden. Greve Museum also has a collection of
paint ings and interiors dating from the 19th and
20th centuries.
Hedeland is an impressive recreational area
with everything from a steam railway, lakes
and streams to canoeing, a golf course and an
amphitheatre.
Life in the country, in the fields, in the stables
and in the farmhouse - that is the story that is
told at Lundekrog Agricultural Museum in Ejby.
Danish and foreign top names appear on stage
all year round at the region’s three major venues,
Teaterbygningen and Tapperiet in Køge
and Portalen in Greve.
Restaurant Fregatten, Hundige Harbour

Braunstein Brewery
Restaurant Arken, Køge Marina
Restaurant visits
To the north you will find Restaurant Fregatten
in the front row, overlooking the entrance to
Hundige Harbour and scenic Køge Bay. Here
you can enjoy Danish food of high quality with
an international twist. Restaurant Arken on
Køge Marina serves a bite of Skagen in the
form of a huge seafood buffet with everything
the sea has to offer spiced with a fair dose of
North Jutland humour. In the heart of Køge,
you will find Denmark's largest market square
outside Copenhagen. Until 2.30pm on Wednesdays
and Saturdays it provides the setting for
cosy market days. When your shopping is over,
visit the courtyards, attracted by the jazz you
hear from outside and also by the exciting
beer you can enjoy there, produced by Køge's
own brewery, Braunstein, or sample the organic
juice from Søbogaard. Both the Braunstein
Brewery and Søbogaard are open to visitors by
previous arrangement.
If you want a menu without fish and seafood,
you will enjoy a visit to several restaurants specialising
in delicious Danish food, such as Skipperkroen
or Slagter Stig in Køge, another choice
could be Italian lunch specialities at Fusilli
with its adjoining supermarket at Waves shopping
centre in Greve.
Or discover My Coffee Shop, a small specialist
shop where you will find a myriad of irresistible
temptations ranging from coffee, tea, chocolate,
oils and spices to a host of other exciting
specialities.
To appease your hunger, you have the choice
of several good eating places in Køge and Greve
– or you may prefer to spend time in the kitchen
preparing your own food.
The selection of restaurants includes every -
thing from major culinary experiences to more
simple meals.
If you choose to cook your own food, we
would recommend the large number of specialist
shops selling cheese, spices, wine and delicacies
for every taste. And then you can let the
children loose in Kildebrønde Orchard where
you are free to eat your fill while picking your
own berries and fruit. If you like spicy food,
Toftegaard Garden Centre is worth a visit –
sell ing more than 100 sorts of chili and nearly
just as many sorts of tomatoes.
Denmark’s oldest half timbered house with a date
past & present
Between
Taking a walk through the streets of Køge's
city centre, you will experience the beautiful
old and well preserved houses on one hand,
representing 700 years of town history, and on
the other hand you will see Køge as an enterprising,
modern town with splendid cultural
events and great holiday shopping.
Since 1966, Køge's City Council has applied a
special programme for the preservation of old
buildings, whether they are privately owned or
city property. That is why our town is visit ed by
a large number of groups every year who
enjoy a conducted tour with a talk about the
history of Køge.
Close to the city centre is the industrial harbour
which is in constant development, and
Køge's corporate scene includes both major
and minor companies.
To discover the old town, pick up a city walk
map at VisitKøge.
Greve district has a special place in the history
of Denmark during World War I. Just south of
Mosede Harbour is Mosede Fort that was constructed
up to and during World War I. In 1915
the Danish army commenced the building of
the Tune position, a defence line from Køge
Bay to Roskilde Fjord with trenches, concrete
caves and barbed wire entanglements. It is still
possible to see remnants of the concrete caves
in the landscape. This meant major military
activity during the war, also involving local citizens
to a great extent. The first museum featuring
“Denmark during World War I” will be
opened in early August 2014 on the centenary
of the outbreak of the war.
In association with Valdemar, the local history
society, Greve Museum has established a culture
route, Karlslunde Kulturrute, in the village
of Karlslunde. Ten of the historic places and
buildings are marked out with signs holding a
descriptive story, which you can also find on
the museum’s homepage.
Køge River
The River Pool in Køge
Why is Køge
located here?
Køge was founded by royal order at the first
place south of Copenhagen that had a natural
harbour. The order was issued in the years
prior to 1288, and placing the town also in -
cluded the design of a town plan. This plan
continues to provide the setting for the old
town centre up to our days. Køge was granted
a municipal charter in 1288.
tournaments, and it was also here criminals
were punished for breaking local and national
laws.
Jousting tournaments are history now, and criminals
are no longer punished in public, but we
still have market days in Køge Torv on Wednesdays
and Saturdays until about 2.30pm.
Køge is one of the towns in Denmark that have
the largest number of well preserved half timbered
houses in its centre, including Denmark's
oldest half timbered house from 1527,
verified by a date inscription, and the oldest
town hall still in use, dating from 1552.
In the past, the harbour in Køge was home
base for foreign trade with North German
towns, and the large market square was the
centre of commerce and venue for jousting
Huskorset resulterede
i, at 16 kvinder blev anklaget for hekseri og brændt på bålet. 4
bridges across Køge Å. The river is noted for
its population of large perches and sea trouts,
but it is also possible to catch river trout, pike
and non-predatory fish.
Offshore fishing
Køge Bay is well known for its unique population
of sea trout, a considerable number being
landed every year, and the shore is a great
place to use a spinning or fly fishing rod. Some
great places for anglers trying their luck are
near Mosede Harbour and Mosede Fort.
Watersports
If the success of your holiday depends on beaches and the sea, you have
come to the right place - there are several kilometres of extensive beaches
along Køge Bay. In the north, Greve offers 8 kilometres of wonderful sandy
beaches in addition to a small gem by Mosede Fort, where the beach has
been widened to accommodate more visitors. Køge has beaches north of
town as well as to the south. Ask the locals which beach to choose – it
depends a bit on wind and weather. The beaches along Køge Bay are shallow
and child friendly, but long bathing jetties have been established in
several places to enable the adults to get "water under the keel".
The sea makes it possible to pursue all kinds of
activities. Yachtsmen may choose the marinas
in Køge, Mosede or Hundige to put into port.
Visitors bringing their own boat or dinghy can
launch them from Hundige Harbour against a
fee. Depending on wind conditions, the bay is
an ideal windsurfing spot.
Surfing equipment is not for hire, so bring your
own board.
A more peaceful and family friendly activity is
canoeing on Køge River. Canoes are for hire at
The arts
Art lovers interested in the working process from
the initial idea to the finished work of art will get
a unique experience at KØS, Museum of art in
public spaces. This is the only museum in Denmark
that is dedicated to the artistic process.
Here you can see the model of the Little Mermaid,
and among the many other ex hibits are
Poul Gernes' sketches for the decoration of
Herlev Regional Hospital and Peter Brandes'
sketches for the decoration of Vejleå Church in
Ishøj.
The Queen's gobelins
There is no doubt, however, that the
Museum's highlight is Bjørn Nørgaard's sketches
for Queen Margrethe II's gobelins. The
finished woven tapestries are on view in the
Galleries
Along Køge Bay, you will find galleries staging
a wide variety of art exhibitions throughout
the year.
In the north in Greve, Portalen's Gallery is worth
a visit, and its Art Hall features changing exhibitions
of established Danish artists. Also Greve
Museum has exhibitions of fine and applied art
at regular intervals, not forgetting its permanent
collection of paintings by older artists.
L.A. Ring ”Greve Strand”
Jørgen Haugen Sørensen: Locked
The story about
the beach and the holiday visitors
Danish painter L. A, Ring spent the summer of 1911 at Greve Strand
with his family. Here he created several paintings inspired by the
light and scenery of the seaside. It was just in those days that the
first holiday cottages and holiday visitors came to Greve, which has
named the period as the first migration wave to Greve. This makes
the painting an important part of the study made by Greve
Museum on the development of Greve from open country to
suburb in the 20th century.
Three folders have been published about
Køge River Path with description of the
sights along the 22 km route. The folders are
available free of charge at VisitKøge until out
of stock.
The folders are also available as PDF files
on Køge Municipality’s homepage
www.visitkoege.com (under ”Inspiration –
A ridge is an oblong hill formed by melt water
deposits beneath a glacier. The ridge Køge Ås
provides a clear picture of an oblong, today
wooded, hill transversing the landscape along
with Køge River from Køge and further inland.
The ridge is the most popular local recrea tion al
area, and we usually recommend our nature
loving visitors to spend a day out in the high
hills with the steep slopes.
Shelter camp near Spanager
Walking or cycling
You can cycle on Køge Ås along the 22 km river
path (Køge Å stien) to the hills Regnemark
and enjoy the sight of beautiful
Gammelkjøgegaard Manor from the 17th century,
maybe pausing in Clara's Cemetery by the
wall to the grave of Grundtvig, the famous
Danish hymn writer and priest.
Greve Swim Centre
An activity holiday is
great fun
The stretch of coast along Køge Bay provides a
lot of activity opportunities - fishing, boat ing,
walking or swimming.
The weather will not prevent a fishing or boat ing
trip or a refreshing walk, but should it be too
rough for a beach trip, you could visit the swim
centre in Køge with all its facilities, such as baby
pool or 10 metre jumping tower, climbing wall or
water chute. Greve has one of the largest swim
centres in Scandinavia. Huge halls, varying
depths, long swim lanes for fitness swimming,
diving boards, towers, infant and toddler pool,
fitness centre, water gymnas tics and an outdoor
playground are just a small selection of the
facilities offered by Greve Svømmehal.
26

Golf is a popular activity for many people,
including holiday makers. There are five golf
courses in the Køge Bay region, all of them a
chal lenge to both the advanced golfers and
the beginners.
If "real" golf does not appeal to you, try a
minigolf competition, e.g. at Vallø Camping.
For energy to be burnt off, the Play Jungle in
Køge is the perfect place to do so for both big
and small! It is an INDOOR playland of more
than 1,500 sq.m just waiting to be explored
and a challenge to everyone – irrespective of
age. If the adults prefer to watch the activities
with a good cup of coffee, or if they need to
be connected to their work, they can do so
with the wireless internet available. The café
sells coffee and other good stuff. There is a
magnificent overview of the playland from the
café, enabling you to keep an eye on the playing
children. You are allowed to bring your
own food but drinks are to be bought at the
Play Jungle.
Køge Swim Centre welcomes you to the watery,
fun and wholesome element. With swimming
pools, fitness centre and café, the attractive,
bright and warm swim centre provides space for
play and cosiness as well as exercise. You can
actually spend a full day here from opening till
closing time.
Great scenic experiences are in store for you
at Hedeland, the former clay and gravel pits
which have in recent decades been converted
into an impressive recreational area – to be
enjoyed by the locals as well as tourists. A
steam railway, several riding centres, a motorsport
track, lakes and streams for canoeing, an
18-hole golf course and an amphitheatre seating
4,000 people are available today, as are rather
un-Danish features like a ski hill with lifts and a
vineyard.
Cycling through Greve
Several visitors prefer to experience Greve on
bike to enjoy the meeting of town and country
which is so characteristic of Greve. Whether
you are more inclined to nature on the beach
and moors or attracted to family activities and
shopping galore, Greve has got it all – in cycling
distance. You will find separate paths for
cyclists and walkers along major roads and
throughout the landscapes.
Touring the summer country
Bring the whole family along on a cycling tour
from Hundige Strand Familiecamping to Greve
Museum, accommodated on a pretty local farm
on the outskirts of idyllic Greve Village. For the
adults, exhibits relate history and art dating
back to the 18th century Hedebo region, while
the children will enjoy the home baked buns
and cakes in the museum’s lovely garden. From
here your tour can proceed through the village
and through Tune, from where you have access
to beautiful Hedeland with its grassy hills, small
lakes and winding paths.
Setting out from Hundige Harbour, just a few
minutes on bike will take you to Waves Shopping
Centre with 110 shops under one roof –
and to the Beach Park (Strandparken) with
sand, water and sun.
Adventures at Hedeland
Hedeland is an obvious place for children and
adults to explore on bike or on foot, and to
enjoy here is a host of activities for big and
small alike: canoeing, golf, a steam railway
and a ski hill. In 2012 Hedeland opened a
children’s oasis with a playground for small
children. Other attractive features at Hedeland
are a 1.3 km open air fitness track and a
ropeway for older children and adults.
The Tune Position
History buffs will also find
both the Tune Position and
Mosede Fort within cycling
distance in Greve. The Tune
Position functioned as a strategic
fortification during
World War I. Its largest “battery”
were the howitzer guns
at Mosede Fort, including 6
fast shooting 12 cm guns.
KØGE MUSEUM
The collections at Køge Museum illustrate
the cultural history of the town
and the district from the Stone Age to
recent times. The Strøby Egede Grave
with 8 skeletons dates from the Mesolithic
period, the largest number of bu -
ried persons found from a period
whose graves have rarely been dis -
covered.
The history of Køge as a medieval town
is also on view in addition to two large
treasure finds of silver coins from the
17th century. The museum includes
living rooms for both farmers and town
dwellers besides their kitchens, thus illustrating
peasant and urban culture, in
addition to a comprehensive collection
of local costumes and textiles for daily
use, including a number of Hedebo textiles
with its charac teristic sewing style.
Opening hours:
Sat 11am-3pm.
June-Aug: Tue-Sun 11am-5pm, Sep-May:
your holiday activity could be a cycling tour through the
scenic areas along Køge Bay. One tour suggestion is to follow
the Køge Ås ridge on the 22 km Køge River Path (Køge
Å-stien) ending in the hills of Regnemarks Bakker outside
Borup west of Køge. (The brochure is only available in
Danish, but it includes an excellent map).
VisitKøge sells a Cycling Folder including
8 different tours. The routes have a
length of 6, 15, 25 or 45 km, all of them
going through beautiful scenery in and
around Køge. The folder costs DKK 25.
When the internet is not
enough
Nowadays you can plan your holiday in advance by means
of brochures and the internet, book accommodation and
make plans for what to see and experience.
Nevertheless it is not unusual for many visitors to want a
little extra information and more details about the attractions
or accommodation, just to make sure that they get
what they had in mind.

At VisitKøge, we make a point of personal service and as -
sistance to ensure that you and your family get the best
holiday possible in our region.
A computer is available in our shop, and outside opening
hours you can use the interactive screen in the window.
Restaurant Skipperkroen
Skipperkroen is one of Køge’s oldest and best known
eating places, built in 1632 - a restaurant & café on
Køge Harbour with a large covered back garden.
Today Skipperkroen serves good Danish food of high
quality, freshly made sandwiches all week. French and
Indian dishes are also on the menu.
The building has provided the setting for numerous
colourful persons and events. In the restaurant you will
find art created and signed by Her Majesty Queen
Margrethe II of Denmark.
The chef finds the use of fresh ingredients very important,
and every day the restaurant is provided with
fresh fish, meat and vegetables from the market. The
restaurant has an interesting wine list. Skipperkroen is
an international meeting place with a cheerful and
friendly atmosphere you will never forget.
