Untitled
Mylinda Grinstead
I’ve seen something behind my eyes
Something more potent than those little squiggles you get
From staring at the sun or watching
Blood cells pump through the veins of your eyelids
Your eyelids were beautiful before they were opened
Sliced around the sockets to disappear
I remember kissing them shut
Now I often bring my knuckles to my lips
Pressing them together ever so softly
So the nerves can just barely feel the pressure
Synapses aren‘t bridged so closely
And the signal takes longer to get through
Before you came back she had toadstools on her
Forehead and drool on her chin
The Bell company wasn’t as kind to me
I could never get that signal through
The lines were always down
As though the wires had been purposefully cut
I use wire cutters now to twist tight bands
Around the necks of my saplings
We never grew saplings together
You left sliced off your eyelids and threw them at my feet
They fell behind me and I never looked back
I didn‘t see the blood spilt on the clay covered floor
I swept them up with fragments of your left over offspring
And piles of dust that made you all
