at first I found you unattractive
so many freckles it was hard
to tell the shade of your skin
your hair I thought was too big
too long and too curly and
too long unbrushed I believed
surely his hands must tangle
snag and tear pieces at a time
from your tender scalp
so it was years before I liked you
before I wanted to touch you
and your voice still makes
my flesh jump and crawl away
when you beg for attention
like a new puppy after all these years
it was years before we spoke
of our obsession with breasts
yours smaller than mine ugly
with freckles but still
you let me touch them once
and I liked you more
but then the sun rose
