PROGNOSIS<br />

The presence of a horseshoe kidney by itself has<br />

not been shown to adversely affect survival and<br />

is only rarely a cause for mortality. 3 In neonates<br />

with horseshoe kidney, mortality, and long-term<br />

outcome are largely determined by the presence<br />

and prognosis of associated congenital anomalies<br />

and syndromes.<br />

Many different malignancies have been reported<br />

in horseshoe kidneys. The commonest<br />

tumor reported is renal cell carcinoma although<br />

its incidence is reported to be no higher than<br />

that in the general population. 1,10 A twofold increased<br />

risk of Wilms tumor is reported in patients<br />

with a horseshoe kidney. 2,11 But the National<br />

Wilms Tumor Study Group (NWTSG) estimates<br />
