Fire Medic Associate Degree Program<br />
Program Description<br />
A Firefighter Paramedic (Fire Medic) protects life and property<br />
through fire suppression, rescue, prevention, and emergency medical<br />
treatment capabilities. Graduates are highly trained in the modern<br />
firefighting techniques and paramedic skills necessary to make them<br />
successful in the dynamic emergency services environment.<br />
Rationale<br />
<strong>Gateway</strong> currently offers a Fire Protection Technician Associate<br />
Degree program which prepares graduates for careers in firefighting.<br />
This program will combine content from that program with the current<br />
Paramedic <strong>Technical</strong> Diploma program to create a new Fire Medic<br />
program. The new program will provide graduates more flexibility as<br />
they will be qualified to pursue careers as firefighters, paramedics, or<br />
cross-trained firefighter paramedics.<br />
The new Fire Medic program will replace the current Fire Protection<br />
Technician program as most area fire departments are now requiring<br />
new hires to be dually trained as firefighters and paramedics.<br />
<strong>Gateway</strong>’s current Paramedic training programs will continue to be<br />
offered as stand-alone programs for students who are not pursuing<br />
the firefighting aspect of the program. The Fire Protection Technician<br />
program advisory committee has endorsed this change in the<br />
program.<br />
