The company anticipates that 2006 will be another record year in<br />

terms of sales and a rise of 4%-5% is predicted. Much like the results<br />

in 2005, this growth is expected to be driven by sales in the outdoor<br />

category.<br />

YUE YUEN<br />

Hong Kong-based Yue Yuen Industrial Holdings—the world’s<br />

largest maker of athletic shoes—has announced the results for the<br />

first quarter of its 2005/06 financial year, which ended on December<br />

31, 2005.<br />

Sales rose by 17.6% to<br />

US$878.0 mn<br />

Retail sales operations,<br />

driven by growing<br />

consumption in China,<br />

rose by 142%<br />

First quarter profits rose<br />

by 16%<br />

Nevertheless Yue Yuen is<br />

cautious about the future<br />

Sales for the first quarter rose by 17.6% to US$878.0 mn from<br />

US$746.4 mn in the first quarter of the previous year. A breakdown<br />

of sales by product category shows that athletic shoes—the company’s<br />

largest category—grew by 9.6%.<br />

The fastest growth came from the company’s retail sales operations<br />

which rose by 142%, driven by growing consumption in China.<br />

Profits in the first quarter of 2005/06 also rose strongly—by 16% to<br />

US$85.9 mn, compared with US$74.0 mn in the first quarter of the<br />

previous year.<br />

Despite these encouraging results, Yue Yuen is cautious about the<br />

future, given the potential impact of the trade dispute with China and<br />

an increase in production costs.<br />
