1.2 Objective: By the end of this session<br />

benefits of do<strong>in</strong>g advocacy work<br />

Section 1.2 Why do we advocate?<br />

Introduction<br />

• In the previous sessions we developed a shared understand<strong>in</strong>g of advocacy.<br />

• In this session we will discuss why advocacy can help us <strong>in</strong> our HIV/<strong>AIDS</strong> work.<br />

• Some problems can only be solved with the help of <strong>in</strong>fluential people or organisations,<br />

i.e., they can only be solved by advocacy.<br />

Instructions<br />

Tim<strong>in</strong>g: 1 hour 15 m<strong>in</strong>utes<br />

1 Expla<strong>in</strong> the objective of this activity and <strong>in</strong>troduce the topic.<br />

2 Expla<strong>in</strong> that after the workshop participants will need to persuade colleagues <strong>in</strong> their<br />

organisation or other NGOs/CBOs of the benefits of <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g advocacy <strong>in</strong> their work. This<br />

activity is an opportunity to practise ‘sell<strong>in</strong>g’ advocacy by promot<strong>in</strong>g its benefits.<br />

3 Expla<strong>in</strong> to the participants that they will be asked to persuade other NGOs to do<br />

advocacy work by creat<strong>in</strong>g a pretend advertisement for television, radio or a newspaper, or<br />

a short speech.<br />

4 Divide the participants <strong>in</strong>to four groups.<br />

5 Display these guidel<strong>in</strong>e questions to help the small groups prepare:<br />

? Th<strong>in</strong>k of any examples or case studies of advocacy work: why was advocacy used to<br />

solve the problem (and not only community mobilisation, education, awareness-rais<strong>in</strong>g, etc.)?<br />

? Is there anyth<strong>in</strong>g that advocacy can achieve that other methods cannot achieve?<br />

6 After the groups have prepared, ask each group to perform or display their advertisement<br />

or bullet po<strong>in</strong>ts.<br />

7 With the whole group, discuss the benefits of do<strong>in</strong>g advocacy work as identified <strong>in</strong> the<br />

advertisements or speeches:<br />

? What does advocacy offer to your organisation that you do not already have?<br />

? Is there anyth<strong>in</strong>g that advocacy can achieve that other methods cannot achieve?<br />

? Were the advertisements or speeches ‘sell<strong>in</strong>g’ advocacy, or were they really sell<strong>in</strong>g other<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs, such as community mobilisation or IEC?<br />

? If advocacy is so good, why do many organisations not do it?<br />

8 Contribute any key benefits that may have been missed by the advertisements<br />

or presentations.<br />
