Skills-build<strong>in</strong>g activity – option 1<br />
Objective: By the end of the session participants will be<br />
able to prepare and deliver a simple presentation<br />
<strong>Advocacy</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Action</strong> Card 5 Writ<strong>in</strong>g and deliver<strong>in</strong>g a presentation<br />

Instructions<br />
Tim<strong>in</strong>g: 2 hours<br />
1 Introduce the topic and expla<strong>in</strong> the objective of the activity to the participants.<br />
2 Ask participants to expla<strong>in</strong> what a presentation is and its purpose.<br />
3 Ask participants to divide <strong>in</strong>to groups and prepare a five to ten-m<strong>in</strong>ute presentation on an<br />
advocacy issue (possibly an issue already discussed <strong>in</strong> the workshop) for the whole group.<br />
Each group should decide which member of the group will make the presentation.<br />
4 Presentations often <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />
• a clear message with two to three key po<strong>in</strong>ts each<br />
• use of visual aids<br />
• clear <strong>in</strong>structions to the audience on when to ask questions.<br />
5 Ask a number of groups to deliver their presentations to the whole group and <strong>in</strong>vite<br />
feedback on each, based on the follow<strong>in</strong>g k<strong>in</strong>ds of questions:<br />
? How clear were the messages?<br />
? How persuasive were the arguments?<br />
? How useful and clear were the visual aids?<br />
? How clear and useful were the answers to the questions?<br />
? What could be improved?<br />
6 Discuss which presentations worked best, and what made them more successful than others.<br />
7 Invite participants to discuss their experiences of deliver<strong>in</strong>g presentations, especially as part<br />
of advocacy work.<br />
Facilitators’ notes<br />
! You may want to ask some pairs to do a different activity – prepar<strong>in</strong>g some advice (for<br />
example, ‘Try to...’ and Try not to...’ tips) for plann<strong>in</strong>g and deliver<strong>in</strong>g a presentation.<br />
! Encourage the use of visual aids but emphasise that too many can be distract<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
! Encourage positive feedback as well as suggestions for improvement.
