This research is one of the first in the MIR community to review <strong>and</strong> summarize important<br />

studies on <strong>music</strong> <strong>mood</strong> in <strong>music</strong> psychology literature, giving MIR researchers <strong>and</strong> information<br />

scientists theoretical ground <strong>and</strong> insights on <strong>music</strong> <strong>mood</strong>.<br />

Mood categories have been a much debated topic in MIR. This dissertation research<br />

identifies <strong>mood</strong> categories that have been used by real users in a real-life <strong>music</strong> listening<br />

environment. The categories derived from empirical <strong>social</strong> tag data serve as a concrete case of<br />

aggregated real-life <strong>music</strong> listening behaviors, which can then be used as a reference for studies<br />
