Tips and Techniques Deliver a Stunning Mirror
Finish for a Genuine Niche Market
For the professional painter looking to create a room with
a view versus applying another coat of paint, a faux finish
can create a unique and personalized setting. Plus, it can
open up a complementary niche market for contractors. Faux
finishes provide a great opportunity to enhance a pro’s menu
of services with a technique that creates a one-of-a-kind look in
any room, for any customer. There are many
ways to provide faux finish, the stunning
mirror-like finish described here was easy to
accomplish.
While there are numerous product options
available from leading manufacturers, for our
demonstration we chose a Venetian Plaster
product manufactured by Roman Adhesives.
In just a few hours, using two flexible joint
knives and a hawk and one finishing trowel
from Hyde Tools, we transformed a bare wall
into a shimmering façade that really fooled
the eye. Gary Clark, owner of Masterpiece
Finishes in Belchertown, Massachusetts,
provided the professional application.
A Clean Canvas
As with any painting project, for a better
finish start with a well-prepped wall. The
wall board had been primed with latex and
Roman Venetian Plaster forms the base for an
excellent faux finish.
sanded with 100 grit sandpaper. While blemishes may seem
minor on bare wallboard, they can stand out like a sore thumb
when the faux finish is completed.
A small hole in the wall from a fast swinging door was quickly
repaired using an over-the-counter kit. The Wet & Set® product
