the Rolls Royce Museum in
Zoom Kindermuseum
5 And the culture of laughter for all –
at the Caricature Museum Krems
seum, in whose ancient vaulted cellar more
than one visitor has discovered a fondness
for beer.
The eastern section of Styria is where
the famous Zotter chocolate is manufactured,
and it’s a good place to learn the
fine points of creating this delicacy – from
the fermentation of the cocoa beans to the
finished product. And it goes without saying
that in both cases sampling the wares
is part of the experience – this the Austrian
interpretation of “interactive”.
You can’t start too young …
* PRINCE & PRINCESS.
Playing the part of the emperor’s children is
a thrill no kid would want to miss! In Vienna’s
Schönbrunn Palace young visitors can
learn about all aspects of life in the time of
the Empire, construct a model of the Palace
Park and find out what the Habsburgs’
favourite food was. www.schoenbrunn.at
* ZOOM KINDERMUSEUM.
In this Vienna museum you won’t see any
signs saying “Don’t touch!” To the contrary:
kids should touch everything here. You can
ask as many questions as you like, touch,
explore, feel and play – in other words,
experience the world with all your senses.
* ON THE TRAIL OF THE KNIGHTS.
Visiting the Museum Ehrenberg is like going
back in time to the Middle Ages, and the
clear presentation makes historic events
easy to understand. Afterwards enjoy a
hike in the European Castle Museum, which
features four castles and fortresses.
* KLOSTERNEUBURG MONASTERY.
With the guidance of experienced art educators
and artists, children explore the monastery
and become acquainted with art works
from the Middle Ages to the present.
* MUSEUM DER MODERNE MÖNCHS-
BERG. In this Salzburg museum kids are introduced
to art by other kids their own age.
It’s a great experience to be able to explore
a museum without grownups around.
The Rolls-Royce Museum in Dornbirn
unfortunately doesn’t let you sample the
wares in the form of a test drive, but you
can look to your heart’s content in the
biggest museum of its kind in the world.
And what are the kids doing while Mum
and Dad are busy having fun looking
through museums? The very same thing.
Many Austrian museums now offer special
cultural programmes for kids that cleverly
combine fun and games with learning. You
will find a few tips in the box above. •
