* styriarte. The Styrian festival, from 27 June to 27 July 2008, offers a much-anticipated opera
sensation this year: Nikolaus Harnoncourt will conduct his own staging of Mozart’s “Idomeneo”.
* BRUCKNERFEST AND CLOUD OF SOUND. In 1979 a Bruckner symphony accompanied the first
“Cloud of Sound” above Linz. From 14 to 28 September, 2008, Anton Bruckner’s music will again
form the centrepiece of the traditional music festival, which offers a captivating counterpoint to the
more visionary Ars Electronica.
* OPERETTA DREAMLAND. If you enjoy being swept away by the sweet sounds of operetta, you
europe in linz
In 2009 Europe will again have a Cultural Capital in Austria: this time it’s Linz
Austria’s third-largest city has long made a name for itself with its innovative art and cultural scene,
with the Linz Cloud of Sound and the Ars Electronica now known all over the world. In 2009 Linz will
even be named a European Cultural Capital. To get culture enthusiasts in the mood for that special year,
several exceptional events will be in place ahead of time. From the end of May to mid-July the Offenes
Kulturhaus Upper Austria (OK) will present contemporary art at unusual locations in the city, such as old
cellars and mine shafts. Equally unconventional is the orientation of the film festival “Crossing Europe”,
where young European directors present their debut or second film to draw attention to socio-political
issues. Also concerned with crossing borders and bringing nations together is the “Linz Europa Tour”:
aboard a ship converted into a concert stage, musicians and the “cultural ambassador”, Austrian singer
Hubert von Goisern, travel from Linz downriver through Central and Eastern Europe to the Black Sea,
giving concerts in over 20 cities – together with musicians taken aboard along the way. The big final
celebration will take place back in Linz in summer 09: a festival extending over several days will unite
the artists of this two-year tour for a mega-concert.
