Austrian National Tourist Office
Holidays in Austria – in the very country whose
name has the reputation all over the world
as being synonymous with culture. And indeed,
culture blooms and blossoms spectacularly here
every summer. Nearly every small village has its
own theatre, and the programmes from towns
and cities could fill entire books. But it’s not only
theatre that gives the country a festive air during
the summer, but also the many music recitals and
exhibitions, the dance performances and poetry
readings. The atmosphere here is by no means
stuffily “high-brow”; the emphasis is on cheerful
pleasure, like the interplay between artistic quality
contents.
and good food and drink, which is something
uniquely Austrian. And in order to give young and
very young guests the chance to “get their feet
wet” in culture and arts, many museums and other
cultural institutions have special programmes for
kids. So holidays in Austria become more than
romping around in deep grass or wading barefoot
in a stream – they are the first encounter with a
world that lends wings to the spirit.
Welcome! I wish you splendid holidays in Austria!
Sincerely, Petra Stolba
Season of festivals
No summer break here: again in 2008 cultural events will come fast
and furious. Here is a brief overview to whet your appetite
Austria and culture: these two words
are virtually inseparable. A visitor on
summer holidays here will encounter one
of the country’s many festivals wherever
he turns. In 2008, for the second season,
Bregenz’s famous floating stage will be the
stupendous setting for Puccini’s riveting
opera “Tosca” – an extraordinary experience
combining classical music with state-
of-the-art light and sound engineering
against the picturesque backdrop of Lake
Constance. And the Wörthersee Festival
features opera greats as well as stars of
pop music and musicals.
Vienna is also an ideal place to spend
warm summer nights enjoying cultural
treats – and admission is often free. The
impressive “Concert for Europe”, given by
the Vienna Philharmonic in the beautiful
Schönbrunn Palace Park, will for the 5th time draw music fans from all over the globe.
Only a few kilometres away, the world’s
largest open-air festival takes place each
June: the three-day Donauinselfest attracts
over two million visitors to the city’s island
in the Danube annually for a star-studded
extravaganza.
During the summer the whole of Austria
is transformed into one big festival landscape.
The concerts of the Vienna Festival,
Linz’s Cultural Summer, the Innsbruck
Festival, and colourful street festivals like
“La Strada” in Graz and the “Pflasterspektakel”
in Linz have one thing in common:
whether it’s classical sounds, jugglers or
tango dancers, it’s all accompanied by culinary
delicacies. After all, even the art of
enjoyment is cultivated in Austria like no
place else.
This delight in the finer things of life is
perhaps one of the many reasons that
Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier has become
such a popular meeting place in the past
several years – in addition to the many
events and exhibitions in the two museums
and at the Kunsthalle, the enormous
courtyard, which is reminiscent of south-
1
ern cities, and its diverse culinary offerings
also make the “MQ” something of a chillout
oasis in the middle of the city. Fans
of digital art, on the other hand, will be
drawn to Linz, the venue for the annual Ars
Electronica, the most important festival of
its kind in Europe.
Movie buffs will also feel like they are in
paradise in Austria: every spring the Diagonale
festival in Graz celebrates Austrian
film, and the Viennale, held in October, has
long become an internationally acclaimed
film event.
Great – and after that? Then it’s high time
to start thinking about securing tickets for
the 2009 theatre and concert season. •
More top tips
* styriarte. The Styrian festival, from 27 June to 27 July 2008, offers a much-anticipated opera
sensation this year: Nikolaus Harnoncourt will conduct his own staging of Mozart’s “Idomeneo”.
www.styriarte.com
* BRUCKNERFEST AND CLOUD OF SOUND. In 1979 a Bruckner symphony accompanied the first
“Cloud of Sound” above Linz. From 14 to 28 September, 2008, Anton Bruckner’s music will again
form the centrepiece of the traditional music festival, which offers a captivating counterpoint to the
more visionary Ars Electronica.
* OPERETTA DREAMLAND. If you enjoy being swept away by the sweet sounds of operetta, you
will be in seventh heaven at the Mörbisch Festival on the Lake or in the Fortress Arena in Kufstein in
Tirol. www.seefestspiele-moerbisch.at and www.operettensommer.com
europe in linz
In 2009 Europe will again have a Cultural Capital in Austria: this time it’s Linz
Austria’s third-largest city has long made a name for itself with its innovative art and cultural scene,
with the Linz Cloud of Sound and the Ars Electronica now known all over the world. In 2009 Linz will
even be named a European Cultural Capital. To get culture enthusiasts in the mood for that special year,
several exceptional events will be in place ahead of time. From the end of May to mid-July the Offenes
Kulturhaus Upper Austria (OK) will present contemporary art at unusual locations in the city, such as old
cellars and mine shafts. Equally unconventional is the orientation of the film festival “Crossing Europe”,
where young European directors present their debut or second film to draw attention to socio-political
issues. Also concerned with crossing borders and bringing nations together is the “Linz Europa Tour”:
aboard a ship converted into a concert stage, musicians and the “cultural ambassador”, Austrian singer
Hubert von Goisern, travel from Linz downriver through Central and Eastern Europe to the Black Sea,
giving concerts in over 20 cities – together with musicians taken aboard along the way. The big final
celebration will take place back in Linz in summer 09: a festival extending over several days will unite
the artists of this two-year tour for a mega-concert.
Viennese wine. Vienna is the world’s only metropolis with its own wine-growing
industry, boasting some 700 hectares of vineyards. The most popular whites are “Riesling”
and “Weissburgunder”, while a favourite red is “Zweigelt”. The best place to enjoy them is
at the typical wine taverns called “heuriger”.
Concerts at the Mozart House
The “Concerts at the Mozart House” are held at Mozart’s first dwelling
in Vienna. This is where the composer lived and worked in 1781 while
in the service of Archbishop Colloredo. The Sala Terrena, Vienna’s oldest
concert hall, was the venue for several of Mozart’s own performances.
The Mozart Ensemble presents a varied programme consisting of highlights
from the great works of such illustrious composers as Mozart,
Haydn, Schubert and Beethoven. Its numerous concert appearances both
Theater an der Wien – the new opera house
The Theater an der Wien counts among Vienna’s most beautiful and
venerable theatres. It was built in 1801 in the spirit of Mozart by
Emanuel Schikaneder, the librettist of “The Magic Flute”. A number of
famous works were premiered here, including Beethoven’s only opera,
“Fidelio”.
The theatre has enchanted music lovers for over two centuries with
its outstanding acoustics and authentic, intimate ambience. In the
Mozart Year 2006 the theatre was reopened as Vienna’s new opera
house, with the performance schedule now extending throughout the
entire year. The Theater an der Wien will present up to 50 new opera
projects by the year 2010, making it Vienna’s centre for Baroque
opera and contemporary music theatre.
"La Traviata"
in the Roman quarry of
St. Margarethen
The lovely, witty, happy-go-lucky courtesan Violetta has centre
stage in the Verdi opera “La Traviata”, which will be performed
in the coming festival season in the extraordinary ambience of
the Roman quarry. Director Robert Herzl is looking forward to the
challenge of preparing this popular opera for St. Margarethen:
“We will create a production that takes into consideration the
monumental scale of the stage as well as the intimacy of the
plot. And I am certain that we will succeed.”
At once romantic and tragic, “La Traviata” is a wonderfully told
tale of love and death. The staging of this opera in the Roman
quarry will display both great sensitivity and vibrant colour.
Visitors can look forward to an unforgettable evening
under starry skies!
“La Traviata”: 9 July to 24 August 2008
Most. Making a good “most” – a typically Austrian kind of juice pressed from fruit – is just
as demanding as making a good wine. In the Lower Austrian Mostviertel region, for example,
pears for “most” are picked, washed and pressed by hand. After several weeks in fermentation
barrels, this precious “cuvée” of fruit wine is then bottled. Gourmets appreciate the pear
wait for their schnitzel, beer, coffee and the check. But as good as Leopold,
the waiter, is at keeping the guests in line, he is not quite so adept at taming
his own heart – much to the chagrin of his boss, the lovely innkeeper
Josepha Vogelhuber. He makes unmistakable advances toward Josepha,
but she gives him the brush-off.
What happens then? You’ll have to come to the 2008 Mörbisch Festival
on the Lake to find out. The part of Leopold will be played by one of
Austria’s greatest entertainers, Rainhard Fendrich, while Zabine Kapfinger
will assume the role of the object of his adoration, Josepha. The melodies
from this operetta, such as “It Would be Wonderful”, “In Salzkammergut”,
“Your Eyes”, “Fairies” and “My Song of Love” have become hits around
the world.
“most” for its tangy taste and fruity aroma. Aside from the alcoholic pear “most” there is also a “sweet most”, a popular juice
produced in Austria’s large fruit-growing areas using apples and pears. In Upper Austria a special type of pear, the “mostbirne”,
or “most pear”, is used for making this beverage, and traditionally some apples are added in the pressing process.
A refreshing hot-weather drink is a blend of “most”, “sweet most” and mineral water.
Salzburg – the world’s stage
Salzburg’s international fame is due in no small part to its stunning scenic
beauty and the incomparable charm of its historic town centre. The
silhouette of the city is unmistakable, dominated by the Hohensalzburg
Fortress and the Baroque cathedral. The city’s most famous son continues
to lure music lovers from all over the globe: W. A. Mozart, probably the
most-performed composer in the world, was born here on Getreidegasse
on 27 Jan. 1756.
Salzburg has a mere 150,000 inhabitants, but over 4,000 events each
year! The musical year begins with the Mozart Week in January, continues
with the Easter, Whitsun and Salzburg Festivals to the Culture Days in Oc-
Beer. The art of brewing beer has a long tradition in Austria. As early as the Middle Ages the
monks were brewing their own beer in the monasteries. Still today, one can sample the traditional
homemade beer – often called “liquid bread” because of its nutritional ingredients – in
many monasteries. In addition to numerous small breweries, today there are also a large num-
tober and the Jazz Festival in November, and finishes with the atmospheric
Advent and Christmas events. In 2008 Salzburg offers two very special
highlights: the premiere of “The Sound of Music” at the Salzburg Marionette
Theatre in May (www.marionetten.at) and the International Bach Festival
Culture is here to discover and enjoy: this is the motto of Austria’s
southernmost province.
Carinthia is full of cultural highlights. Visitors can enjoy concerts, tours of
monasteries and palaces, poetry readings, traditional festivities and
theatre productions throughout the entire year. Carinthia’s Cultural Summer
alone features well over 300 cultural events, held at venues ranging from
the famous Wörther Lake floating stage to the Comedy Theatre Porcia and
the legendary castle arena of Finkenstein. A high point of the golden autumn
is the “HeimatHerbst-Feste”, a celebration of dance, song and culinary
it is not only Gurk Cathedral’s Lenten altar cloth, the largest and oldest in
Festival Ossiach – Villach
11 July to 31 August 2008
artists and audiences from the world over. The Ossiach Abbey,
which dates from the 11th century, lies directly on the shores of idyllic Ossiach
Lake and was furnished magnificently in the Baroque period. Since
1969 it has been the home of the Carinthian Summer, with other venues
added since that time, such as the Congress Center Villach and Günther
Domenig’s famous Steinhaus.
The legendary artists who have become associated with the Carinthian
Summer include Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Arvo Pärt, Lorin Maazel, Zubin
from springs, rivers and lakes – most of which is already perfectly drinkable water. Moreover, in many national parks naturally
pure, crystal-clear water bubbles right out of the ground and is bottled just how it is. This way it stays fresh right to the supermarket
shelf. By the way, when hiking through the Austrian mountains, always be sure to have a bottle with you: for your own
use you can fill it with as much cold, clear water as it will hold.
Culture in Graz
Why the city on the Mur River breathes culture.
Innovation has a long tradition in Graz. And this is no contradiction in
terms. Literary luminaries like Peter Handke, Wolfgang Bauer, Alfred Kolleritsch,
Barbara Frischmuth and Elfriede Jelinek – later the recipient of the
Nobel Prize – made the Forum Stadtpark, founded in 1960, famous. The
brilliant playwright Werner Schwab continued this success story into the
1990s. Another legendary institution is the Graz School of Architecture,
which, particularly in the 1980s, was regarded as something of a phenomenon
in the international scene. Some of the leading representatives of
this group, such as Günther Domenig, Klaus Kada and the duo Szyszkowitz-
Kowalski, have left their imprint on Graz’s cityscape and added outstanding
modern accents to the architecturally rich Old Town.
The newest and also most prominent witnesses to this bold marriage of
old and new – Peter Cook and Colin Fournier’s Kunsthaus Graz and Vito
Acconci’s Mur Island – are not by members of the Graz School, but with
their playfully innovative, biomorphic forms, they nevertheless represent a
continuation of what the Graz School stood for.
Graz – The Cultural Capital. Its reputation as a lively, vital city of culture
was the reason that in 2003 Graz was the first Austrian city to receive the
title “European Cultural Capital”. The great success of the “Graz 2003 –
European Cultural Capital” project, however, was due to the unique flair
of the city and its openness to new things – as well as to the neighbours to
the east. And these qualities have been intensified since 2003.
music.
styria
This is why even today Graz calls itself the “Cultural Capital”.
This is not about cultural showing-off, and not about outdoing others with
high-profile events; rather, it’s about a kind of culture that is lived out, celebrated
and enjoyed.
• Every spring the DIAGONALE is kicked off: the festival of Austrian film.
• Also in the spring: the “springfestival” for electronic art and music, the
leading event of its kind in Austria.
• The “styriarte” festival concerns itself with new approaches to early
music. Which is also the guiding philosophy of its artistic director, Nikolaus
Harnoncourt.
• And Graz is ruled by jazz as well. This is evidenced by events like the annual
“Jazz Summer”: all-star jazz with big events at small prices.
• At the street and puppet-theatre festival La Strada, held every summer,
the world’s top street artists descend on Graz.
• The annual “steirischer herbst” festival presents the very latest in international
art trends.
This selection of festivals represents only a few of the annual highlights of
the cultural calendar.
styriarte 2008: 27 June to 27 July 2008
Acastaway washes up on a beach devastated by a violent
storm: Idomeneo, King of Crete. This scene from
Mozart’s opera “Idomeneo” is not only the centre point of
the main event of the styriarte 2008 – with Nikolaus Harnoncourt
as both conductor and stage director (!). It also
symbolises the overall theme of the festival. “Everything
flows” is the motto, and focuses on the element of water.
In this regard, the styriarte has always had a penchant
for symbolism – as does Mozart in “Idomeneo”. As the
philosopher Plato once said: “Everything flows and nothing
abides; everything gives way and nothing stays
fixed.” The styriarte 2008 examines water as a “flowing”
element, from the pictures that since time immemorial
have linked humans with water, to actual water as a lifegiving
substance and at the same time a hotly contested
resource.
make the traditional “Zirbengeist”, a tasty, spicy liqueur. In summer the red pine cones are picked from the tree, cut into
small pieces and submerged in fruit schnapps for several weeks until the liquid has turned brown. Sugar or honey is then
added as a sweetener. This schnapps – enjoyed with moderation, of course – is very healthful because of the essential
oils it contains. Used as a home remedy, it is said to even be effective as an antidote to colds and sore muscles.
Bregenzerwald: culture in enchanting nature
The surprising co-existence of the traditional and the modern shapes the
attitudes and cultural scene in the Bregenzerwald. Here it is perfectly
natural that a noble, wood-shingled farmhouse stands right next to a very
modernistic dwelling. The arts calendar features high-calibre concerts of
the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg festival as well as jazz and contemporary
music. The Schubertiade Schwarzenberg is an absolute magnet for
world-renowned singers, instrumentalists and fans of the music of Schubert
and his contemporaries (13–22 June and 23 August to 7 September
2008).
From here it is not far to the Bregenz Festival (mid-July to mid-August),
with its spectacular opera and musical productions on the world’s largest
floating stage.
The Bregenzerwald’s museums are true gems: the famous 18th-century painter Angelika Kauffmann is honoured with an exhibition in Schwarzenberg’s
Angelika Kauffmann Museum. The origins of the traditional dress
worn by the women of the region are explained in the “Juppenwerkstatt” in
Riefensberg. The tradition of cheese making in the Alps is the subject at
Schröcken’s Alpine museum “uf’m Tannberg”. Austria’s only Women’s
Museum is located in Hittisau and presents special exhibitions on femalerelated
themes.
Take to the “KäseStrasse” (Cheese Road) for a lesson on cheese-making
in the Bregenzerwald. Numerous cheese-related events initiate visitors into
the secrets of cheese production. Simple inns and award-winning gourmet
restaurants serve dishes made with local products.
Feldkirch Festival 2008
22 May to 1 June, Artistic director: Philippe Arlaud
For two weeks each year in the early summer, Feldkirch is transformed
from a quiet small city to a centre of attention of the international music
scene. The Feldkirch Festival, under its new artistic director, Philippe
Arlaud, compellingly links different musical periods, genres and forms of
expression, resulting in exciting premieres and experimental projects. The
incomparable ambience of medieval Feldkirch serves as the backdrop for
a stimulating musical discourse involving artists, art, cultures and audiences
– an interchange that places diversity above arbitrariness.
Programme preview for 2008
Austrian composer Johanna Doderer’s multimedia opera “Strom” will be
performed in Feldkirch, staged by Philippe Arlaud. The dramatic plot is derived
from the Greek drama “The Bacchae”, by Euripides. Sounds from the
various electrical waves that surround us determine the tonal colour of the
opera.
The vocal ensemble accentus, which devotes itself not only to the performance
of the a-cappella repertoire but also to new arrangements of
chamber music works, will appear in a performance of Antonín
Dvoˇráks “Stabat Mater” – one of the most powerful oratorios of the
Romantic period – in the Feldkirch Cathedral, under the musical direction
of principal conductor Laurence Equilbey.
Other events in Feldkirch: dance with Ana Yerno, silent films with orchestral
accompaniment, film music, jazz and more.
and in the process create a very special delicacy: buttermilk. This drink contains many mineral nutrients and a fat content of
less than one per cent. What’s more, a large number of Austrian dairies now create milk, yoghurt and buttermilk products in
many delicious flavours and export them to other countries.
Kunsthaus Bregenz
Exhibitions of international contemporary art
The Kunsthaus Bregenz opened in 1997 as an exhibition space for
contemporary art that was unique in terms of its architecture. The
façade, consisting of etched glass shingles, gives Peter Zumthor’s fascinating
structure its characteristic transparent lightness and the ability
to direct natural light into all four levels of the building. This outstanding
quality was honoured with the 1999 Mies van der Rohe Prize for European
architecture.
In the space of only a few years, the Kunsthaus Bregenz has developed
a distinctive profile setting it apart from other museums around the
world. Five to seven temporary exhibitions of current art are presented
each year, nearly without exception in-house productions that the exhibiting
artists design especially for the space. A particular thematic
focal point of the Kunsthaus’s exhibition, publication and presentation
activities is the interface between art and architecture.
An opera thriller about love, power and jealousy
“Tosca” by Giacomo Puccini
Apainter and a police chief, arch-enemies from opposing political factions,
discover that they are in love with the same woman. A love triangle full
of cruelty and lust, passion and jealousy, mistrust and possessiveness: one
of Giacomo Puccini’s greatest masterpieces, “Tosca”, awaits music fans in
2008.
Three strong characters – and a legendary jump
“Vissi d’arte, vissi d’amore“ – “I lived on art, I lived on love”: so begins the
famous aria of the singer Floria Tosca, a woman who has never cared for
politics, but who is now drawn into the struggle when the police chief Scarpia
gets his hands on her lover Cavaradossi. Scarpia tortures Cavaradossi
because he has helped the former Consul of the Roman Republic, Angelotti,
Radler. Austrians enjoy a good beer, especially to help cool off after a strenuous activity
like biking. So it’s no wonder that a popular low-alcohol drink that combines beer with
a soft-drink beverage is called a “radler”, a colloquial German term for cyclist. The first
“radler” is said to have been created from beer and fresh lemonade in the 1920s, and over
find refuge. When Tosca no longer can bear hearing his screams, she reveals
Angelotti’s hiding place. Cavaradossi is sentenced to death. Scarpia
promises to stage a mock execution of her lover if she yields to him.
But Tosca decides to kill Scarpia rather than to give herself to him: she
stabs the sadistic police chief and piously prepares his body for burial. Contrary
to Scarpia’s promises, Cavaradossi truly is executed, and in her despair,
Tosca jumps to her death from the castle ramparts.
Spectacular scene changes
For the story of Floria Tosca, a stage set has been created on the shores of
Lake Constance that permits spectacular scene changes, making the transition
between the individual acts comprehensible for the audiences as well
as illuminating the background of the events.
variant popular in Vorarlberg is the blend of beer with mineral water, which is called a “sour radler”. And a very
innovative take on the “radler” had evolved over the past several years in many Austrian ski huts: the “Alpine
radler” – light beer mixed with an herbal soft drink.
Curious about people? Experience history in Hohenems!
Visit the only Jewish museum in the Lake Constance region
With a new permanent exhibition, the Jewish Museum Hohenems
presents Jewish history and culture between Austria and Switzerland,
Germany and Liechtenstein. In a provocatively up-to-date manner, the exhibition
illustrates situations and conflicts of everyday Jewish life: living in a
Christian-dominated environment, migration in Europe and social change.
The Museum is housed in the Villa Heimann-Rosenthal, built in 1864 in a
neo-classic style. It offers audio guides in German, English and French for
an international audience and presents priceless original documents and
video interviews. Young visitors seven years old and up can enjoy a special
children’s exhibition with stories by Monika Helfer and shadowgraphs by
Barbara Steinitz. And the Museum’s café tempts visitors with delicious
Jewish wedding cake, bagels and kosher wine.
The city’s Jewish quarter, which has largely been preserved, forms together
with the old Christengasse and the Schlossplatz a one-of-a-kind
ensemble. From the Baroque synagogue to the houses of the Jewish merchants
and craftsmen, peddlers and innkeepers, from the villas of factory
owners to the Jewish School, from the ritual baths to the Jewish poorhouse:
all these structures have now been carefully restored and filled with
most important synagogue musician of the 19th century, the Hohenemser
At the foot of the Schlossberg, with its castle ruins from the 9th century, visitors
can marvel at the Renaissance palace of the Hohenems Counts, built
in 1563 by Martino Longhi. As prince-archbishops and cardinals, Hohenemsers
from Rom to Salzburg have written European history – and with a
letter of 1617 assuring safe passage, made possible the founding of the
most important Jewish community in the Lake Constance region.
The winter concerts of the Schubertiade, one of the world’s most renowned
chamber-music festivals, are held from October to May in Hohenems’
recently-opened Markus Sittikus Hall. Among the highlights of the
2008 season are concerts by the Alban Berg Quartet, the Artemis Quartet,
Juliane Banse, Sol Gabetta, the Guarneri String Quartet, the Hagen Quartet,
Christopher Maltman, Sabine Meyer, the Pacifica Quartet, the Pavel Haas
dance & theatre.
The curtain rises!
On Austrian stages, dance is increasingly moving into the limelight
During the “steirischer
herbst”, all of Graz
becomes a stage
The Austrians’ passion for dancing
has a long history – of the 1815 Congress
of Vienna it was said that “it doesn’t
make advances; it dances”. Since those
days we have grown into an international
centre for artistry in movement. “ImPuls-
Tanz”, for instance, is Europe’s largest
festival for contemporary dance, which
will take the stage in Vienna once again in
summer 2008 and can be experienced at
the city’s most magnificent venues – from
the Burgtheater to the Schauspielhaus.
And it’s not only the experts that show
off their talent: amateur dancers can also
participate in some 150 workshops of all
kinds – whether you are a complete
novice or an experienced rug-cutter.
The Tanzquartier Wien is the country’s
first institution dedicated exclusively to
the genre of contemporary dance and
performance.
Located only about 60 kilometres from
Vienna, the Festspielhaus St. Pölten is one
of Austria’s most important dance venues.
and newcomers present a sampling of
the newest trends on the Austrian dance
One person who certainly doesn’t feel like
dancing is the poor, rich “Everyman”, who
is called before Death every year on the
Which by no means dampens the high
A large number of stages – some of
which are not actually stages at all – will be
Burgtheater, the legendary Gartenbau
cinema and the trendy “Badeschiff Wien”
event venues, and the events are equally
diverse, ranging from the classical to the
unconventional. •
Flaming script and
church concerts
Handel’s “Belshazzar” forms the centrepiece of the Innsbruck
Festival 2008, from 8 July to 24 August 2008
Astage version of Georg Friedrich Handel’s oratorio “Belshazzar” kicks
off the 32nd Innsbruck Festival 2008, with René Jacobs conducting the
RIAS Kammerchor and the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin. The well-known
director Christoph Nel will stage Handel’s treatment of this biblical story of
the feast of Belshazzar, which is interrupted by the appearance of flaming
script on the wall prophesying that the end of the king’s reign is near.
The early-music concerts of the 2008 festival will be held in various churches
of the capital city, with music from the Renaissance and Baroque. The main
performance venues of the Festival and the Ambras Castle Concerts will
again be the historic Spanish Hall and the Castle’s Keuchengarten.
Obstler. “Obst” is the German word for fruit, and the “obstler” is a typically Austrian
schnapps distilled – as its name suggests – from mashed, fermented fruit. Its aroma comes
from the type of fruit used in its making: pear, apple or plum. The rule of thumb: the better the
you will have to put off until the next
certainly the Kunsthistorisches Museum,
and you are advised to allow an entire day
to see it, as it is easy to lose track of time
with all those famous works. It’s a similar
story with the Albertina, featuring one of
the world’s largest collections of graphic
art; with the Museum Leopold, specialising
in works of the early 20th century; and
with the Museum of Modern Art in the
denly confronted by the future – in the form
of the shimmering, bladder-shaped Kunsthaus,
affectionately known among the locals
as the “Friendly Alien”. Indeed, most of the
country’s modern museums are an impressive
experience even from the outside: the
Lentos in Linz enchants visitors with its unusual
structure of glass surfaces and exposed
concrete, while the Museum der Moderne
Mönchsberg in Salzburg is completely
encased in marble, with its rhythmic joints
derived from arias from “Don Giovanni” – a
reference to the city’s most famous son,
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The glass cube
that is the Kunsthaus Bregenz, on the other
hand, seems like a huge beacon that takes
Vorarlberg is known for its modern architecture.
Aside from the many successful
examples of wooden structures here, the
annual design exhibition “handwerk + form”
also draws prominent architects to the
Graz’s Sculpture Park continues to be
something of an insiders’ tip – although
the open-air collection of Austrian and international
artists is an important platform
for object art and attracts sculpture fans
from all over. Visitors in 2008 will experience
the city in the midst of an artistic mania:
the “steirischer herbst”, Austria’s most
important festival for new art, this year
celebrates its 40th birthday.
In 2008 fans of the Salzkammergut have
one more reason to travel to this gorgeous
area: the Upper Austrian Provincial Exhibition
will introduce visitors to the natural
beauties, the artistic treasures and the folk
culture of the region. “Land und Leute” is
the theme of the exhibition. These features
are also what make the Achensee Museumswelt
in Tirol so popular. The small museum
village looks at local customs and
the work and life of the inhabitants. Similar
in its focus is the Museum of Tirolean
Farmhouses, boasting 14 old farms from
various regions that have been dismantled
and rebuilt here. This is the perfect way to
really get to know the authentic side of
your host country. The vast number and
great diversity of exhibitions never ceases
to astound visitors.
The Caricature Museum in Krems an
der Donau is devoted completely to satirical
humour, while Vienna’s “Third Man
Museum” contains virtually everything
related to Carol Reed’s celebrated film
classic. Even the finer things of life have
their own exhibitions here: beer lovers
the famous Zotter chocolate is manufactured,
finished product. And it goes without saying
that in both cases sampling the wares
Playing the part of the emperor’s children is
a thrill no kid would want to miss! In Vienna’s
Schönbrunn Palace young visitors can
learn about all aspects of life in the time of
the Empire, construct a model of the Palace
favourite food was. www.schoenbrunn.at
* ZOOM KINDERMUSEUM.
In this Vienna museum you won’t see any
kids should touch everything here. You can
explore, feel and play – in other words,
experience the world with all your senses.
* ON THE TRAIL OF THE KNIGHTS.
Visiting the Museum Ehrenberg is like going
back in time to the Middle Ages, and the
clear presentation makes historic events
easy to understand. Afterwards enjoy a
hike in the European Castle Museum, which
features four castles and fortresses.
The Rolls-Royce Museum in Dornbirn
unfortunately doesn’t let you sample the
wares in the form of a test drive, but you
can look to your heart’s content in the
biggest museum of its kind in the world.
And what are the kids doing while Mum
and Dad are busy having fun looking
through museums? The very same thing.
Many Austrian museums now offer special
combine fun and games with learning. You
Contemporary works and art brut
The Essl Museum contains over 6,000 works of contemporary art from
the collection of Agnes and Karlheinz Essl, and with its exhibitions
provides an unparalleled overview of the art of the present day. The Essl
Collection at Donau-Au 1 in Klosterneuburg is open Tue.–Sun. 10am–
Another interesting museum is the Art Brut Museum Gugging. It was conceived
as an exhibition space for the artistic style known as art brut, and
the focus of the exhibition is on works by patients at the Gugging Psychiatric
Hospital. Examples of art brut from abroad as well as works of other
A good apricot schnapps, by the way, can be recognised by its intensive aroma of ripe fruit, while visually it is as
Art of the present day
The Essl Collection is among the world’s largest private
collections of contemporary art, which, over the course of
35 years of passion for art, has grown to some 6,000 works.
Austrian painting from 1945 represents a strong focus of the
collection, but since the 1990s increased attention has also
been directed to international art – with prominence given to
current works by young artists. Today, important artists from
Europe, the US, Australia, Mexico and China are represented,
and the media is not restricted
to painting and sculpture but
also encompasses photography,
video and new media. The
museum contains 7,600 m2 of
exhibition and storage space.
In the innovatively designed
galleries, the accessibility of
the art works to the viewer is
enhanced by the exciting in-
terplay between the work, light
The collector couple Agnes and Karlheinz Essl
and space.
The art works are presented in about ten high-quality exhibitions
per year in new, constantly varying dialogues: 2008 will
see a major retrospective of Gerhard Richter, a joint show of
works by Israeli and Palestinian artists and exhibits spotlighting
young emerging artists from Austria.
The museum, which is completely autonomous and privately
financed, sees itself as a place where visitors can openly engage
with art. A varied workshop programme promotes encountering
art on a personal level and allows participants to
get hands-on experience with artistic concepts and materials.
The workshops are suitable for children, youth and
adults alike.
The promotion of contemporary, electronic and experimental
music is an additional focus. With concerts, performances
and sound installations, in particular the >react-chain<
series, the composer Karlheinz Essl, Jr. has succeeded in
creating an internationally renowned forum for new music
in a museum context.
Carnuntum –
Rome’s Danube metropolis
It was 2,000 years ago, in A.D. 6, that the most important metropolis of
the Roman Empire was born. Tiberius, later to become emperor, erected
a fortified winter camp in the Carnuntum area. In the following centuries
Carnuntum, as the capital of the Roman province of Upper Pannonia, regularly
played an important role in world politics.
Bit by bit, Roman structures are being rebuilt on the original sites. In this
way, Carnuntum is becoming a one-of-a-kind centre for fabulous journeys
back in time to the worlds of the Romans and for exciting insights
into the field of archaeology.
Easily accessible from both Vienna and Bratislava, the Archaeological
Park Carnuntum is ideally suited as a day-trip destination for the entire
family.
Kulturfabrik Hainburg
Venue and meeting place on the Danube
The Kulturfabrik Hainburg is an inspiring location right on the banks of the Danube – a
meeting place for the stimulating exchange of ideas, a stage for cultural events and
especially a place to spend enjoyable moments.
The imperial tobacco factory impresses with its elegance and lightness. Cast-iron columns
traverse the former factory halls, and the rooms are spacious, functional and possess a simple
beauty – a perfect setting for conferences and seminars, for presentations and gala dinners,
as well as for private celebrations and weddings.
The spectacular glass terrace facing the Danube provides guests with stunning views across
the Danube Flood Plain National Park and perfectly sets the mood for enjoying the restaurant’s
culinary delicacies.
Temporary special exhibitions and a varied calendar of cultural events make the Kulturfabrik
Hainburg a favourite meeting place for local residents as well as guests to the Danube region
of Auland-Carnuntum. The exhibitions held here address topics that, like the Kulturfabrik
itself, have a strong connection with the region, are related to historic themes or are
remarkable for their avant-garde and visionary character.
Provincial Exhibition 2008
St. Wolfgang, Strobl, St. Gilgen present
“Artists’ Lives on Lake Wolfgang”
Since the discovery of the Salzkammergut by painters of the Biedermeier
period, the landscape surrounding Lake Wolfgang has become a meeting
place, a second home or even the permanent home for creative spirits.
For the Upper Austrian Provincial Exhibition 2008 the three villages of St.
Wolfgang, Strobl and St. Gilgen are creating a living stage, on which
renowned artists will be introduced with their biographies, works and personal
histories in a completely new way. The spectrum of exhibitions encompasses
the areas of music, literature, painting and film, for which the
Salzkammergut and especially Lake Wolfgang served as a source of inspiration.
St. Wolfgang will present the central theme, “Artists’ Lives on Lake
Wolfgang”, looking at the poets, painters and musicians who summered
here. The Mozart Village St. Gilgen examines the life of Maria Anna Mozart
as a child prodigy and the sister of a genius. Strobl will present contemporary
art relating to the topic of “Artistic Resistance in the Salzkammergut”.
Romantic transportation links between the villages are provided by the
ships of the Lake Wolfgang fleet, with the paddle steamer “Kaiser Franz
Josef I” offering visitors a travel experience just like in the old days. Another
highlight not to be missed is a ride up the Schafberg on the historic cog
railway with the Imperial Pullman car.
Holders of combination tickets or the special Lake Wolfgang Ticket receive
a 30 per cent discount on tickets for the ship and Schafberg train.
Opening times and prices: 29 Apr.–21 Nov. 2008, daily 9am–6pm
are just two of the many varieties of fruit juices available here: apricots, redcurrants, cherries,
Allow yourself to be captivated by Linz. The Upper Austrian capital is
a diverse and modern metropolis with outstanding cultural events
held throughout the year. The Lentos Art Museum (www.lentos.at),
situated directly on the Danube, shows art of the 20th century, while
in the Ars Electronica Center (www.aec.at) the future happens right in
front of your eyes. Enjoy the wonderful views over the city from Linz’s
Pöstlingberg, ride on the mountain railway with its Fairy-Tale World or
visit the magnificent pilgrimage basilica. The historic city centre and
the Baroque main square, with its many shops, quaint beer gardens
Art, technology and society
The Ars Electronica Center Linz.
How can humans and computers communicate with each other without
a mouse and keyboard? Today and in the future? The Ars Electronica
Center Linz does not present exhibitions in the conventional sense, but
rather interactive scenarios that make it possible to experience technology
first-hand. Bringing your body into play and using your voice and
sense of touch give rise to new modes of interaction between the real
world and digital ones. In
an entertaining manner, the
“museum of the future” puts
A princely universe
Forchtenstein Castle has long served as the “safe” for the priceless
family treasures of the Esterházys. Visitors experience a programme
of exhibitions that is among the finest in Europe.
The mysterious treasure chamber, for example, is the only “cabinet of
art and natural wonders” in Europe still at its original location. Among its
contents are valuable and extremely ornate objects of ivory and
bone, which feature astoundingly delicate bridges and columns.
The ancestral halls present Central Europe’s largest Baroque gallery
of family portraits – an exciting and entertaining journey through the
history of the large royal family.
Another fascinating attraction is one of Europe’s largest collection of Baroque
silver furniture. Nearly all comparable collections of other royal
houses were melted down over time to replenish their war chests. The
long military history of the Esterházys is attested to by what is today
Austria’s largest private weapon collection – the former royal arsenal.
A radiant highlight, literally, is the castle’s new comprehensive lighting
system, unique in all of Austria, and the castle also features numerous
recently-completed restoration and exhibition projects.
In addition to the extensive offering of tours, Forchtenstein Castle also offers
a large number of cultural events and a number of special children’s
“Culture is our nature”
These four words
are deeply rooted in
the soul of the Tirolean
Born of the basic attitude
of the people
lived out in the present,
this is a philosophy
that can be felt everywhere. The scenic beauty of the region, the
Allow yourself to be captivated by Linz. The Upper Austrian capital is
a diverse and modern metropolis with outstanding cultural events
held throughout the year. The Lentos Art Museum (www.lentos.at),
front of your eyes. Enjoy the wonderful views over the city from Linz’s
