2.1 Overview<br />

This chapter presents basic geographical, geo-political and socio-ec<strong>on</strong>omic background <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong><br />

to provide a c<strong>on</strong>text for <strong>the</strong> envir<strong>on</strong>mental issues discussed <strong>in</strong> subsequent chapters.<br />

This <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> is not <strong>in</strong>tended to be fully comprehensive, but sources are given for<br />

readers wish<strong>in</strong>g to obta<strong>in</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r details.<br />

2.2 Country maps<br />

Map 1 shows <strong>Iraq</strong>, its six neighbour<strong>in</strong>g states, major cities and <strong>the</strong> Tigris and Euphrates<br />

Rivers. <strong>Iraq</strong>i territory covers an area <strong>in</strong> excess of 430,000 km 2 , while <strong>the</strong> Gulf coastl<strong>in</strong>e is just<br />

58 km <strong>in</strong> length.<br />
