• Envir<strong>on</strong>mental impacts of oil fires<br />
Crude oil is a mixture of about <strong>on</strong>e thousand different hydrocarb<strong>on</strong>s, with exact compositi<strong>on</strong><br />
(notably <strong>the</strong> ratio of heavy and light comp<strong>on</strong>ents) vary<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>on</strong>e reserve to ano<strong>the</strong>r. The<br />
products of unc<strong>on</strong>trolled oil fires, whe<strong>the</strong>r at a wellhead, a storage area or <strong>in</strong> trenches, will<br />
depend <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> type of crude oil, local climate c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s, <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tent of hydrogen sulphide<br />
(H 2<br />
S), water and/or natural gas, and <strong>the</strong> presence of naturally occurr<strong>in</strong>g radioactivity, especially<br />
dissolved rad<strong>on</strong> isotopes as products of <strong>the</strong> natural uranium decay series.<br />
The broad categories of c<strong>on</strong>tam<strong>in</strong>ants from oil fires are:<br />
• extreme heat<br />
• carb<strong>on</strong> m<strong>on</strong>oxide<br />
• unburned hydrocarb<strong>on</strong>s<br />
• poly aromatic hydrocarb<strong>on</strong>s (PAHs)<br />
• polychlor<strong>in</strong>ated-dibenzo-diox<strong>in</strong>s and furans<br />
• carb<strong>on</strong> soot<br />
•<br />
•<br />
• carb<strong>on</strong> dioxide<br />
• rad<strong>on</strong><br />
oxides of sulphur<br />
oxides of nitrogen<br />
