As shown <strong>in</strong> Map 2, <strong>the</strong>re are currently 18 prov<strong>in</strong>ces or governorates. S<strong>in</strong>ce 1970, three of<br />

<strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn governorates (Dahuk, Sulaymaniyah and Arbil) have been officially designated<br />

as a Kurdish aut<strong>on</strong>omous regi<strong>on</strong>, with a separate elected legislature. This regi<strong>on</strong> came under<br />

UN and coaliti<strong>on</strong> protecti<strong>on</strong> after <strong>the</strong> 1991 Gulf War, to prevent <strong>the</strong> <strong>Iraq</strong>i regime from tak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

military acti<strong>on</strong> aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> Kurdish populati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

2.3 Geographical features<br />

<strong>Iraq</strong> can be roughly divided <strong>in</strong>to four major geographical z<strong>on</strong>es. 1,2 These are described briefly<br />

below and shown <strong>in</strong> Map 3.<br />

(a) Desert plateau: Approximately 40% of <strong>Iraq</strong>i territory c<strong>on</strong>sists of a broad, st<strong>on</strong>y pla<strong>in</strong><br />

with scattered stretches of sand, ly<strong>in</strong>g west and southwest of <strong>the</strong> Euphrates River and<br />

sparsely <strong>in</strong>habited by pastoral nomads. A network of seas<strong>on</strong>al watercourses – or wadis<br />

– runs from <strong>the</strong> country’s western borders towards <strong>the</strong> Euphrates River.<br />
