• Military waste, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g waste from chemical, biological and nuclear<br />
weap<strong>on</strong>s programmes<br />
The multiple military c<strong>on</strong>flicts dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> past quarter of a century have resulted <strong>in</strong> large and<br />
widespread quantities of military debris (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g unexploded ordnance, spent cartridges/<br />
shells/penetrators, military vehicles etc), toxic and radioactive material (depleted uranium),<br />
c<strong>on</strong>tam<strong>in</strong>ated soils and demoliti<strong>on</strong> waste (e.g. c<strong>on</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g chemicals or asbestos), human and<br />
animal rema<strong>in</strong>s (lead<strong>in</strong>g to elevated disease risks, especially <strong>in</strong> urban areas), and packag<strong>in</strong>g<br />
from military and humanitarian supplies.<br />
Numerous destroyed ed and damaged military y vehicles were aband<strong>on</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> Kuw<br />
uwait after <strong>the</strong> 1991 Gulf<br />
War<br />
ar, , pos<strong>in</strong>g a major clean-up challenge<br />
As described <strong>in</strong> Chapter 4.3, <strong>Iraq</strong> had extensive programmes for <strong>the</strong> producti<strong>on</strong> of weap<strong>on</strong>s<br />
of mass destructi<strong>on</strong>. In additi<strong>on</strong> to waste from research and producti<strong>on</strong> processes and destructi<strong>on</strong><br />
of weap<strong>on</strong>s by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Iraq</strong>i authorities and by UN weap<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong>spectors, many facilities<br />
were targeted dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Gulf War. The potential rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g envir<strong>on</strong>mental risks of toxic<br />
and/or radioactive waste materials from <strong>the</strong>se weap<strong>on</strong>s programmes are unknown.<br />
3.4 Oil <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />
Ma<strong>in</strong> problems:<br />
• likely widespread oil c<strong>on</strong>tam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> of surface water and groundwater due to poor envir<strong>on</strong>mental<br />
c<strong>on</strong>trols;<br />
•<br />
oil <strong>in</strong>dustry ma<strong>in</strong>tenance standards fell due to a lack of spare parts under <strong>the</strong> UN sancti<strong>on</strong>s<br />
regime, <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> likelihood of polluti<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>cidents.<br />
