Burnt date palms show <strong>the</strong> devastat<strong>in</strong>g footpr<br />

ootpr<strong>in</strong>t of war<br />

ar. Large tracts of forest al<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Shatt al-Arab<br />

ab<br />

were levelled elled dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Iran-Ir<br />

an-<strong>Iraq</strong> aq war to reduce potential cover for attack<strong>in</strong>g forces<br />

orces.<br />

There does not appear to be any readily available data c<strong>on</strong>cern<strong>in</strong>g risks to <strong>Iraq</strong>’s natural forest<br />

cover, though <strong>the</strong> comb<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> of c<strong>on</strong>flict and sancti<strong>on</strong>s will have <strong>in</strong>creased pressure <strong>on</strong> forest<br />

resources and <strong>the</strong>re is a need for an up-to-date assessment.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 1980s and 1990s, 80% of <strong>the</strong> 17-18 milli<strong>on</strong> date palms l<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Shatt al-Arab<br />

estuary – <strong>on</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> largest area of date palms <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world and yield<strong>in</strong>g an ec<strong>on</strong>omically important<br />

crop – was destroyed, particularly as a c<strong>on</strong>sequence of damage dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Iran-<strong>Iraq</strong> war,<br />

but also due to <strong>in</strong>creased water sal<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> estuary because of upstream dam and irrigati<strong>on</strong><br />

schemes. The rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, weakened palms have been susceptible to pest <strong>in</strong>festati<strong>on</strong>s, fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

degrad<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> quality of <strong>the</strong> forest. 43<br />

3.6 Biodiversity<br />

Ma<strong>in</strong> problems:<br />

• lack of <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>al or legal framework for c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> of biodiversity;<br />

• lack of any effective protected areas network;<br />

• lack of a nati<strong>on</strong>al biodiversity strategy, or acti<strong>on</strong> plan;<br />

• many species under threat from ecosystem degradati<strong>on</strong>, especially loss of <strong>the</strong> Mesopotamian<br />

Marshes.<br />

• Protected areas<br />

The <strong>UNEP</strong>-WCMC Protected Areas Virtual Database lists just eight small protected areas (n<strong>on</strong>e<br />

bigger that 110 ha) <strong>in</strong> <strong>Iraq</strong>. 44 N<strong>on</strong>e of <strong>the</strong>se qualifies for <strong>in</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> official UN List of<br />

Protected Areas ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>UNEP</strong>-WCMC, which <strong>on</strong>ly covers sites larger than 1,000 ha.<br />
