<strong>in</strong>clude dates, wheat, barley, maize, rice and cott<strong>on</strong>, as well as a wide variety of fruit and<br />

vegetables. 38<br />

The UN Food and Agriculture Organizati<strong>on</strong> (FAO) has recently expressed c<strong>on</strong>cerns that <strong>the</strong><br />

2003 harvest (due <strong>in</strong> May/June) could be at risk from c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>stability and fuel and<br />

manpower shortages.<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r key <strong>in</strong>dustries<br />

<strong>Iraq</strong>’s <strong>in</strong>dustrial <strong>in</strong>frastructure was heavily damaged dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 1991 Gulf War and little <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong><br />

has been made publicly available <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> situati<strong>on</strong> s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>n. Apart from armaments<br />

and oil/gas producti<strong>on</strong>, petrochemical <strong>in</strong>dustries make up <strong>the</strong> most important sector, with<br />

products <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g agricultural chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and fibres. O<strong>the</strong>r manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustries <strong>in</strong>clude textile and paper mills, furniture factories, electr<strong>on</strong>ics plants, and ir<strong>on</strong> and<br />

steel producti<strong>on</strong>. All of <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong>dustries use raw materials and/or generate waste that may<br />

pose risks to <strong>the</strong> envir<strong>on</strong>ment and human health, particularly given <strong>the</strong> country’s absent or<br />

rudimentary waste collecti<strong>on</strong> and treatment systems (see page 34).<br />

2.6 Chr<strong>on</strong>ology of key events up to and <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

2003 c<strong>on</strong>flict<br />

The follow<strong>in</strong>g table summarizes key events <strong>in</strong> <strong>Iraq</strong> from <strong>the</strong> country’s <strong>in</strong>dependence <strong>in</strong> 1932<br />

to <strong>the</strong> military c<strong>on</strong>flict of March/April 2003. 39<br />

From <strong>in</strong>dependence to <strong>the</strong> successi<strong>on</strong> of Saddam Husse<strong>in</strong> to <strong>the</strong> Presidency<br />

1932 3 October – <strong>Iraq</strong> becomes an <strong>in</strong>dependent state.<br />

1958 14 July – <strong>the</strong> m<strong>on</strong>archy is overthrown <strong>in</strong> a military coup and <strong>Iraq</strong> is declared a republic.<br />

1963 8 February – <strong>the</strong> government is overthrown <strong>in</strong> a coup led by <strong>the</strong> Arab Socialist Ba’th Party.<br />

1979 16 July – Saddam Husse<strong>in</strong> becomes President.<br />

Iran-<strong>Iraq</strong> war<br />

1980 4 September – war breaks out between Iran and <strong>Iraq</strong>.<br />

1983-1988 – <strong>Iraq</strong> deploys chemical weap<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

1988 20 August – a ceasefire comes <strong>in</strong>to effect, to be m<strong>on</strong>itored by <strong>the</strong> UN.<br />

<strong>Iraq</strong> <strong>in</strong>vades Kuwait<br />

1990 2 August – <strong>Iraq</strong> <strong>in</strong>vades Kuwait and is c<strong>on</strong>demned by United Nati<strong>on</strong>s Security Council<br />

(UNSC) Resoluti<strong>on</strong> 660 which calls for full withdrawal.<br />

1990 6 August – UNSC Resoluti<strong>on</strong> 661 imposes ec<strong>on</strong>omic sancti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> <strong>Iraq</strong>.<br />

1990 29 November – UNSC Resoluti<strong>on</strong> 678 authorizes states cooperat<strong>in</strong>g with Kuwait to<br />

use “all necessary means” to uphold UNSC Resoluti<strong>on</strong> 660.<br />

The Gulf War<br />

1991 16-17 January – war breaks out when <strong>the</strong> US-led coaliti<strong>on</strong> of 34 countries beg<strong>in</strong>s<br />

aerial bomb<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Iraq</strong> <strong>in</strong> Operati<strong>on</strong> ‘Desert Storm’.<br />
