A10s are equipped with c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>al missiles, but also with guns that fire<br />
rounds of depleted uranium (DU). Televisi<strong>on</strong> pictures broadcast by media<br />
<strong>on</strong> 8 April showed A10 aircraft attack<strong>in</strong>g both <strong>the</strong> Plann<strong>in</strong>g and Informati<strong>on</strong><br />
M<strong>in</strong>istries <strong>in</strong> Baghdad. Expert observers c<strong>on</strong>sidered that DU muniti<strong>on</strong>s<br />
were used <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se attacks. In o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>cidents, US Abrams tanks are<br />
known to have burned, with likely releases of DU to <strong>the</strong> envir<strong>on</strong>ment.<br />
• Overall, it is likely that significant amounts of DU rounds have been<br />
fired (around 290 metric t<strong>on</strong>s were reportedly fired dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 1991<br />
Gulf War 111 ), with additi<strong>on</strong>al DU released <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> envir<strong>on</strong>ment from<br />
<strong>the</strong> burn<strong>in</strong>g of armour plat<strong>in</strong>g. This may <strong>in</strong>volve any or all of <strong>the</strong><br />
follow<strong>in</strong>g potential risks to <strong>the</strong> envir<strong>on</strong>ment and human health, based<br />
<strong>on</strong> <strong>UNEP</strong>’s f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Balkans: 112<br />
– Inhalati<strong>on</strong> of DU dust at <strong>the</strong> time of muniti<strong>on</strong> impact, lead<strong>in</strong>g to a<br />
potentially serious additi<strong>on</strong>al health risk to any<strong>on</strong>e <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> immediate<br />
vic<strong>in</strong>ity who survived <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itial blast and subsequent fire;<br />
– Widespread, low-level c<strong>on</strong>tam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> ground surface by DU;<br />
– Presence of <strong>in</strong>tact DU penetrators buried <strong>in</strong> soft ground (which<br />
might be dug up and handled by unprotected <strong>in</strong>dividuals, lead<strong>in</strong>g<br />
to a low-level but unnecessary beta raditi<strong>on</strong> dose to <strong>the</strong> sk<strong>in</strong>);<br />

– Presence of DU penetrator fragments <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> ground surface (which might be picked<br />
up and handled by unprotected <strong>in</strong>dividuals, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g ‘souvenir’ hunters, lead<strong>in</strong>g to a<br />
low-level but unnecessary radiati<strong>on</strong> dose);<br />
– Possible migrati<strong>on</strong> of DU <strong>in</strong>to ground water (and from <strong>the</strong>re <strong>in</strong>to dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water<br />
