In addition to attending the conference,
the students got to tour Paris visiting
sites including the Eiffel Tower, Notre
Dame, Champs Elysées, the Louvre, the
Museé d’Orsay and Versailles.
“This was truly a once in a lifetime
opportunity,” said Megan Kang.
In November, 18 SMCHS sophomores
attended the 27th annual Royal
Russell MUN Conference held in East
Croydon in the London area. The
students represented the countries
of Mexico, Costa Rica, Zambia and
Lebanon in a mock meeting of the
United Nations.
Students Jessica Drivas, Michael
Costigan, Kishen Patel and Cassidy
Pearl, who began preparing for the
conference in the summer, won
Distinguished Delegate awards
for their superior participation.
Students from around the world
participated in the conference from
places including Africa, Japan, Ireland,
Italy and Greece.
“I want them to experience different
cultures and people with different
views that they may not get here in
Southern California,” Remmell said.
Easing the
Transition
An exciting new program began
at Santa Margarita this school year.
Link Crew is a nationally recognized
freshman transition program that
works to ease the transition into
high school.
SMCHS is the only private school in
California to have the Link Crew for
incoming freshmen. The program helps
freshmen adjust to high school life by
teaming them up with upper classmen
who serve as Link Crew leaders.
Link Crew leaders meet every other
week with freshmen, eat with them
from time to time at lunch, invite them
to extracurricular activities and support
them in their studies.
Link Crew is a successful program with
documented and researched results.
Link Crew schools have fewer discipline
referrals, higher academic success and
fewer attendance issues.
AP Scholar Awards
One hundred twenty three students
were named 2008 AP Scholars by
the College Board in recognition for
their exceptional achievement on the
Advanced Placement Examinations. The
exams are graded on a 5 point scale
with scores of 3, 4 or 5 considered
passing. Nationally, only about 18%
of the more than 1.6 million high
school students in more than 16,000
secondary schools worldwide who
took AP Exams in May 2008
performed at a high enough level to
merit such recognition.
