Wings 09 SANTA MARGARITA CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL Bishop Brown Celebrates Ash Wednesday Service at SMCHS The Most Rev. Bishop Tod D. Brown celebrated Ash Wednesday Mass at Santa Margarita Catholic High School on Feb. 25, marking the beginning of Lent. Brown encouraged students, faculty and staff to spend time during Lent praying more, doing good work for others and making sacrifices. “Lent is a gift because it gives us the opportunity to step back and spend more time in reflection,” he said. “It’s time to deepen our personal relationship with the Lord, to be in service to others and deepen our prayer life.” SM Students Build Robot Santa Margarita Catholic High School has a new sport – and you won’t find the team practicing in the gym or on the athletic fields. Instead, they’ve been writing software and tinkering with motors and gears in the classroom. In just three weeks, eleven SMCHS students built a working robot for the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition in March at the Long Beach Convention Center. Based in Manchester, New Hampshire, the nonprofit FIRST was created in 1989 by Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway scooter, as a “varsity sport” for the mind, combining the competition and fervor of a sport with the process of innovation and engineering. Beginning with a kickoff in January, teams had six weeks to design and build a robot for competition starting with a “bot kit” of sensors, wheels, hardware and rules which guide the design of the robot. But while other teams had been working since early January, SMCHS students were in “overdrive,” working to get their robot competition-ready in just three weeks after an opportunity to accept a $6,000 sponsorship from Boeing- Anaheim presented itself. “It’s so cool to see the initiative these kids have,” said science teacher Rennie Stark. Stark said the competition is a wonderful way for students to gain real-world experience. “You need to have something for these kids to get their hands dirty and apply what they learn in the classroom,” Stark said. WINGS | 2009 The Captain’s Gala on the S.S. Valentasia The 19th annual Valentasia, the Captain’s Gala on the S.S. Valentasia, sailed in high style, on Saturday February 21, 2009. Parents, family and friends attended the gala at the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel and Spa. Proceeds from the evening went toward the “Fund for Excellence.” This year, the event featured a “cruise” theme. The evening started with a VIP reception where the popular SMCHS steel drum band welcomed guests. A delicious four-course dinner and fine wine were served. The Fund-a-Need appeal raises money for specific needs at SMCHS. Thanks to the generous donations of Valentasia attendees, this year Funda-Need raised more than $40,000 for tuition assistance, a gift that will truly last a lifetime. Alumnus Scott Fullerton ’08 gave a heartwarming speech on the impact tuition assistance can make on a student’s life. A stay at the beautiful Meritage Resort in Napa was raffled off and live auction items included a Kona Condo Stay, Luxury Getaway to Cabo San Lucas, Guys Day Out Fishing Trip and the ever-popular Day at the Del Mar Races. An Irish dinner with Principal Dunne was a hit as well. Many attendees danced until after midnight to the band “Rembrandt.” The success of Valentasia was the result of the hard work and dedication of Chair Jurga Streit and about 20 parent and student volunteers.
