In March 2008 Ed Naughton, director<br />
general <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> Project<br />
Management and the vice president <strong>of</strong><br />
the International Project Management<br />
Association predicted that the need for<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional Project Management will<br />
continue to increase worldwide. He<br />
further stated that Project Management<br />
skills and capabilities will be recognised<br />
as critical for survival and that<br />
Governments will increase Project<br />
Management education funding as they<br />
recognise the contributions <strong>of</strong> Project<br />
Management to national competitiveness.<br />
The following series <strong>of</strong> modules has been<br />
developed to meet the specialist needs<br />
<strong>of</strong> those involved in project management.<br />
The modules will be most relevant to<br />
participants who:<br />
• Are currently working in a project lead<br />
or Project Management role.<br />
• Are working towards a career with a<br />
Project Management component.<br />
• Require a pr<strong>of</strong>essional certification for<br />
their Project Management activity.<br />

This module examines the various<br />
processes involved in the scoping <strong>of</strong><br />
projects, from their initiation, planning,<br />
definition and ultimately scope control.<br />
The perspective emphasised is that <strong>of</strong> an<br />
engineer or IT specialist in the role <strong>of</strong> a<br />
manager responsible for the conceptual<br />
development <strong>of</strong> a project in terms <strong>of</strong> its<br />
objectives and deliverables. The specific<br />
objectives <strong>of</strong> the module are to appreciate<br />
and understand:<br />
• The difference between Projects and<br />
Operations.<br />
• What is meant by Projects and Project<br />
Management.<br />
• The distinct lifecycle phases <strong>of</strong><br />
Projects.<br />
• The specific elements, processes<br />
and tools involved in the scoping and<br />
conceptual planning <strong>of</strong> Projects.<br />
On completion <strong>of</strong> this module, students<br />
will be able to scope and define projects,<br />
develop work breakdown structures,<br />
develop organisational structures<br />
and a high-level project master plan.<br />
The assessment <strong>of</strong> the module is a<br />
combination <strong>of</strong> an end <strong>of</strong> semester exam<br />
and practical assignments/case studies.
