ECTS Credits in Award: 15<br />

Minimum entry requirements:<br />

Applicants must have a pass in five<br />

subjects (ordinary level) in the Leaving<br />

Certificate, to include Mathematics<br />

and English or Irish, or an equivalent<br />

qualification. Leaving Certificate<br />

Mathematics or Foundation Level at<br />

grade B2 or higher is acceptable for<br />

this programme.<br />

The minimum entry requirements for<br />

graduates <strong>of</strong> FETAC level 5 or 6 awards<br />

are any full award.<br />

Mature applicants (i.e. those who are<br />

aged 23 years or more on January 1st<br />

in the year <strong>of</strong> entry) applying for the<br />

first level <strong>of</strong> programmes are exempt<br />

from this requirement.<br />

Semester 1:<br />

Wednesday nights 6pm – 10pm<br />

Semester 1 and 2:<br />

Sports Placement Project<br />

Fee: €650<br />

Duration: 1 year part-time<br />

(2 semesters)<br />

This course is a joint initiative<br />

between the <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>,<br />

<strong>Blanchardstown</strong> and the Football<br />

Association <strong>of</strong> Ireland.<br />

COURSE AIMs<br />

This course is aimed at those who wish<br />

to enhance their team conditioning<br />

capabilities by gaining a greater<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> the current theory and<br />

practice in the conditioning <strong>of</strong> teams.<br />

Graduates <strong>of</strong> this course may decide to<br />

pursue more specialised studies in Sports<br />

Management and Coaching, either on a<br />

full-time or part-time basis.<br />

This Special Purpose Award is<br />

comprised <strong>of</strong> two distinct modules<br />

• Conditioning for Association Football.<br />

• Sports Placement Project.<br />

Conditioning for Association<br />

Football Module<br />

This module is designed to introduce the<br />

student to fundamental concepts, debates<br />

and methodologies in conditioning for<br />

Association football. The topics and<br />

content imparts an introductory insight<br />

into the conditioning theory and practices<br />

employed in preparing teams. The<br />

module will ensure that students will<br />

recognise, understand and implement<br />

best practice.<br />

Physical Demands <strong>of</strong> Association<br />

Football<br />

Conditioning for Association Football<br />

Functional Performance in Field Sports<br />

Training Principles and Planning<br />

Nutrition<br />

Power and Strength Training<br />

Speed Development<br />

Sport Placement Project<br />

This module is comprised <strong>of</strong> 90 hours<br />

practical application and 15 hours<br />

coaching theory.<br />

This Sport Placement Project allows the<br />

students to map their practical experience<br />

against the learning outcomes <strong>of</strong> this<br />

Special Purpose Award. It is seen as<br />

a capstone module for this award and<br />

ensures that the underpinning theoretical<br />

concepts are transferred into practical<br />

applications and settings.<br />

Each course will be accompanied by an<br />

electronic handbook which will set out the<br />

material to be covered and the learning<br />

outcomes for each module. This will allow<br />

students who are unable to attend classes<br />

at particular times to keep in touch with<br />

what has been covered in class.<br />

COURSE SCHEDULE<br />

The Special Purpose Award in<br />

Conditioning for Association football is a<br />

one year part-time programme.<br />

All students will attend lectures one night<br />

a week Wednesday 6.00pm – 10.00pm.<br />

PROGRESSION<br />

On successful completion <strong>of</strong> the Special<br />

Purpose Award in Conditioning for<br />

Association football (NFQ level 6),<br />

students will obtain 15 ECTS. This<br />

particular module will be considered for<br />

exemption from Coaching Theory and<br />

Practise 1 and 2 in year 1 <strong>of</strong> the Bachelor<br />

<strong>of</strong> Arts (Honours) in Sports Management<br />

and Coaching (NFQ level 8).<br />
