Databases<br />
This module follows on from the<br />
relational database section <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Computer Applications module. It is<br />
designed to equip the student with the<br />
skills required to work with a relational<br />
database in a multi-user environment.<br />
Mathematics<br />
This module is designed to provide the<br />
student with the basic mathematical<br />
concepts and tools required for<br />
information technology.<br />
Training and Support<br />
The aim <strong>of</strong> the module is to teach the<br />
student how to train and support both<br />
customers and users in the effective<br />
use <strong>of</strong> the computer facilities available<br />
to them.<br />
Hardware and S<strong>of</strong>tware Forensics<br />
This subject covers the basics <strong>of</strong> the<br />
computer security and vulnerabilities in<br />
both hardware and s<strong>of</strong>tware parts <strong>of</strong> a<br />
computer system. The modules will also<br />
develop the student’s ability to find and<br />
recover user activity on a computer.<br />
Work Based Learning<br />
A portfolio will have to be created by<br />
students to gain these credits. A portfolio<br />
refers to a claim for learning based on a<br />
collection <strong>of</strong> suitable pieces <strong>of</strong> evidence<br />
<strong>of</strong> that learning. It is usually a folder<br />
containing statements about what a<br />
student has learned and supporting<br />
appendices <strong>of</strong> evidence. The portfolio<br />
should describe work based learning<br />
experiences in the context <strong>of</strong> potentially<br />
credible learning. The experiences cited<br />
should be certified by the employer.<br />

SUBJECT OVERVIEW<br />
Computer Networks 3<br />
The aim <strong>of</strong> this subject is to extend<br />
the student’s knowledge <strong>of</strong> computer<br />
networking technologies and standards,<br />
and to develop network management and<br />
troubleshooting skills.<br />
Computer Systems Administration<br />
This subject provides the students with<br />
the necessary theoretical and practical<br />
skills to be able to specify, install,<br />
configure, debug and manage both the<br />
hardware and operating system <strong>of</strong> both<br />
workstations and servers.<br />
Computer Services Management<br />
This subject is designed to provide the<br />
student with the techniques required<br />
in planning, organising and providing<br />
computer services, particularly in small<br />
and medium sized companies.<br />
S<strong>of</strong>tware Development 3<br />
This subject develops the student’s<br />
working knowledge <strong>of</strong> object-oriented<br />
analysis, design, programming and<br />
maintenance.<br />
Database Systems<br />
This subject extends the students’<br />
database skills and knowledge in four<br />
key areas: Database structure, database<br />
administration, backup and recovery and<br />
distributed databases.
