This module examines the various<br />
processes involved with identifying,<br />
analysing and responding to project risk.<br />
The perspective emphasised is that <strong>of</strong> an<br />
engineer or IT specialist in the role <strong>of</strong> a<br />
manager responsible for minimising the<br />
probability <strong>of</strong> adverse events occurring<br />
coupled with controlling risks that do<br />
occur in the lifetime <strong>of</strong> a project. The<br />
specific objectives <strong>of</strong> the module are to<br />
appreciate and understand:<br />
• The concepts <strong>of</strong> Risk and Risk<br />
Management.<br />
• The components <strong>of</strong> Risk Management.<br />
• The processes involved in Risk<br />
Identification and Quantification.<br />
• How to plan and implement the basic<br />
risk response strategies.<br />
• Evaluate effective techniques used in<br />
developing risk management plans.<br />
• The relative capabilities <strong>of</strong> risk<br />
management s<strong>of</strong>tware tools.<br />
On completion <strong>of</strong> this module students<br />
will be able to undertake both quantitative<br />
and qualitative risk assessments,<br />
develop risk response strategies and<br />
ultimately develop Risk Management<br />
Plans. The assessment <strong>of</strong> the module is a<br />
combination <strong>of</strong> an end <strong>of</strong> semester exam<br />
and practical assignments/case studies.<br />

This module examines the processes and<br />
techniques involved in two key areas <strong>of</strong><br />
Project Management, Communications<br />
Management and Human Resource<br />
Management. The module emphasises<br />
the importance <strong>of</strong> communications in<br />
Project Management, and the techniques<br />
required to make effective use <strong>of</strong> people<br />
involved in projects. The perspective<br />
emphasised is that <strong>of</strong> an engineer or IT<br />
specialist in the role <strong>of</strong> a project manager<br />
responsible for managing a project team<br />
through the project life cycle. The specific<br />
objectives <strong>of</strong> the module are to appreciate<br />
and understand:<br />
• The importance <strong>of</strong> understanding<br />
the communication requirements<br />
<strong>of</strong> stakeholders.<br />
• The components <strong>of</strong> a communications<br />
plan.<br />
• The techniques used for performance<br />
reporting.<br />
• The use and application <strong>of</strong> formal<br />
project documentation.<br />
• The identification and assigning<br />
<strong>of</strong> roles and responsibilities within<br />
the project team.<br />
• Team development.<br />
On completion <strong>of</strong> this module students<br />
will be able to compile a project<br />
communications plan, effectively report<br />
project performance and understand<br />
how effective project teams are achieved.<br />
