Con Artist
War of the junk
DIRECTOR/PRODUCER Michael Sládek GENRE Documentary
RATING Unrated RUNNING TIME 87 min. RELEASE DATE
November 12 NY
John P. McCarthy says … A composite
of Andy Warhol, Chuck Barris and James
Spader, painter Mark Kostabi made his
mark on the art world in the late ’80s by
mass-producing works that studio lackeys
executed and which he signed and promoted.
Oftentimes, he didn’t even come up
with the ideas. Michael Sládek’s entertaining
profile is light fare; his inability to get
behind Kostabi’s façade suggests the artist’s
false front is in fact real—not that that lets
the filmmaker off the hook. Enjoyable, if
not especially satiating, the movie uses
its eclectic soundtrack to do the heavy
thematic lifting. Cue “The Money Song”
from Cabaret.
Richard Mowe says … Isabelle Huppert
gives a superb lead performance as a
Frenchwoman clinging to her plantation
in Africa in the midst of a chaotic regime
change. On her family coffee farm, Huppert
has five days to finish her harvest—only all
of her workers have fled after rumors of a
rebel army’s advance. White Material takes
director Claire Denis back to her childhood
land of Africa. A strong New York Film
Festival bow, the combination of Huppert
and Denis, plus the added bonus of Christopher
Lambert returning to dramatic acting,
should be enough to give White Material
arthouse legs.
