His problem is that he can’t go anywhere on his own—certainly not across the country from Lowell, MA to Las Vegas for paid training. David O. Russell’s family-first dramedy is powered by knockout performances, but doesn’t have much message or thrust. A slim film that carries itself like a champion, The Fighter will win praise and dollars that it doesn’t quite deserve; in this Oscar season, it’s a boxer elevating his stats by taking down weaker competition like The Town. Part thriller, part comedy and very much a biopic, this complex film chronicles the rise and fall of Jack Abramoff, the most powerful lobbyist in Washington, during the latter part of the previous century. Director George Hickenlooper, who passed away suddenly last month, displays a level of flamboyance second only to Abramoff’s, as the director reveals the lobbyist’s delusions and manipulations to provide insight into how this seasoned artisan (or charlatan?) spun his aspirations past some of the most powerful figures in recent history. Kevin Spacey’s virtuoso performance is pitch perfect in this elaborate rondo—with him at the center of this tour de force, the film will draw a healthy and diverse crowd. 70 BOXOFFICE DECEMBER 2010

Pete Hammond says … A superlative adaptation of David Lindsay-Abaire’s Pulitzer and Tony-winning play, Rabbit Hole takes a grim subject—the sudden death of a young married couple’s 4-year-old son—and gives it depth, emotion and surprising layers of humor. With Oscar-worthy performances from Nicole Kidman, Aaron Eckhart and Dianne Wiest, this is tough and demanding, but ultimately hopeful. This small gem of a film premiered in Toronto and was immediately picked up by Lionsgate and given a December release to qualify for Oscars. Should it get deserved awards attention, the distributor could well see it develop into a specialty hit.
