An often unrecognised comorbidity in cardiac patients I will highlight some identified cardiac associations.<br />
As you will see this is an area in which we are early in the learning phase, but knowledge is growing, and<br />
the recognition that this places a huge challenge to health services in the future.<br />

The General Practice Consultation<br />

The consultation is at the heart of General Practice and the interaction between the patient and doctor<br />
during the consultation has a major influence on patient health outcomes.<br />
This presentation will explore the complexity of the consultation with a particular focus on the effective<br />
use of language and communication. It will be based on the results from a number of research studies<br />
using direct video observation of over 300 consultations. Observed interactions include routine <strong>GP</strong><br />
consultations, consultations with the same patients in primary and secondary settings and consultations<br />
over time with patients newly diagnosed with diabetes.<br />
Specific themes will include:<br />
• Effective and not so consultations, and how to tell the difference.<br />
• Consultations in Long Term Condition care with a focus on diabetes and mental health.<br />
• Using the computer to communicate.<br />
• The power of a single word – or two.<br />
