Dr Brian Almand<br />

Speakers Biographies<br />

I have fourteen years of pharmacy practice, with less than one year in community pharmacy. For the past<br />

eleven and a half years I have been working in and out of the Hutt Hospital Pharmacy, all of that time<br />

associated with the Acute Psychiatry Ward. Within the pharmacy I am an Intern Preceptor and supervise a<br />

number of our functions including regular House Surgeon education by our team of pharmacists. I am also<br />

involved with the Hutt Hospital Drug and Therapeutics Committee and the Hutt Valley District Health Board<br />

Pharmacy Reference Group. For the last fi ve years I have been employed half time by the Hutt Valley District<br />

Health Board Community Mental Health Services working closely with the various teams and responding<br />

to General Practitioner referrals where specifi c medicines information is appropriate. Most recently I<br />

have completed studies toward the Postgraduate Certifi cate in Psychiatric Therapeutics by correspondence<br />

through Aston University in the United Kingdom.<br />

My role in psychiatry includes medication review usually associated with my regular attendance at six adult<br />

mental health Multiple Disciplinary Team meetings each week, including that of the Psychogeriatric team;<br />

frequent medication and therapeutics education for various professional groups and question & answer<br />

session with a number of outpatient groups, individual inpatients and their families; provision of medicines<br />

information for psychotropic medications, maternal mental health and neurology; full time availability for<br />

consultation by anyone, I carry a pager and a cellphone! I am also involved in a good deal of behind the<br />

scenes communication between the various teams.<br />

I have received speakers honoraria from the NZ Healthcare Pharmacists Association, Epilepsy New<br />

Zealand, Eli Lilly & Co. and have consulted for Parkinson’s New Zealand and Weltec.<br />

Dr Rohan Ameratunga<br />

Associate Professor Rohan Ameratunga is an adult and paediatric clinical immunologist and allergist, working<br />

in Auckland. A/Prof Ameratunga attended Southland Boys High School in Invercargill and subsequently<br />

the University of Auckland Medical School. He then completed specialist training in adult medicine and in<br />

immunopathology. After training in adult medicine, he trained in paediatric immunology and allergy with<br />

the late Dr Lloyd Cairns at the Princess Mary Hospital. Following the untimely death of Dr Cairns, A/Prof<br />

Ameratunga was responsible for the paediatric allergy and immunology service at the Starship Hospital<br />

from 1991 to 1994. A/Prof Ameratunga has undertaken a clinical and research fellowship in paediatric<br />

allergy, immunology and rheumatology at the Johns Hopkins University Medical School with Professors<br />

Robert Wood, Jerry Winkelstein and Ed Sills.<br />

He is currently working part time as a Clinical Immunologist at Auckland Hospital and is also in part<br />

time private practice. (www.allergyspecialist.co.nz) A/Prof Ameratunga is responsible for the immunology<br />

laboratory at Auckland Hospital and for the teaching program in clinical immunology and allergy for<br />

medical students at the University of Auckland. He co-ordinates the immunology teaching program from<br />

adult medicine registars at Auckland hospital. A/Prof Ameratunga has a special interest in allergic disorders<br />

and in primary immune defi ciency disorders. He has received a PhD for genetic studies of primary immune<br />

defi ciencies and has an active research program in primary immune defi ciency disorders and food allergy.<br />

He has published over 50 peer reviewed articles and book chapters. He was recently admitted to the Faculty<br />

of Science (RCPA) for his contributions to the understanding of primary immune defi ciency disorders.<br />
