Participants<br />

-Multicentric study.<br />

-An independent controller in central office prepared an allocation table <strong>and</strong> sealed envelopes. A computer-generated<br />

r<strong>and</strong>omised allocation table was used to make a sequence of sealed opaque envelopes containing the code of<br />

intervention. The assigned envelope was opened by acupuncturist at the patient’s entry into the trial<br />

Excluded: (1) neurological findings, <strong>pain</strong> or numbness in <strong>low</strong>er extremity; (2) malignancy, (3) infection or inflammatory<br />

disease; (4) fracture; (5) lumbago due to urological problem, gynaecological problem, digestive problem or<br />

cardio-vascular problem; (6) patients who can not stop other conflicting or ongoing treatments; (7) problem of general<br />

condition; (8) dementia; (9) pregnancy; (10) other patients who were judged to be inappropriate <strong>for</strong> participating in<br />

the trial<br />
