Bilingual Education<br />

FSM001 New Student Seminar<br />

0 credit; 1 hour<br />

New Student Seminar is designed to provide an orientation for<br />

students to <strong>LaGuardia</strong> and to provide students with the knowledge<br />

and skills they need to be successful in college. Students will<br />

learn college policies and academic requirements, effective study<br />

skills, and test-taking strategies. In addition, students will engage<br />

in self and career exploration as well as academic planning and<br />

advisement.<br />

FSC100 Career Development Seminar<br />

1 credit; 1 hour<br />

This seminar introduces the theory and process of career development.<br />

Students will examine personal and societal forces that<br />

influence career choice. In addition, an assessment of the students’<br />

career interests, values and skills will help students understand the<br />

theory of career decision-making and apply this knowledge to<br />

their own career exploration. Through the use of career information<br />

resources, students will learn the relationship between selfassessment<br />

and career choice.<br />

Education and Language<br />

The Education and Language Acquisition (ELA) Department<br />

offers courses in education, modern languages and literatures, general<br />

language study, and English as a second language. The department<br />

offers two urban study courses and houses three education<br />

programs: bilingual education, childhood education and secondary<br />

education.<br />

ELB102 Educational Psychology: The Bilingual Child in an<br />

Urban Environment<br />

3 credits; 5 hours<br />

This course deals with an examination of the psychological theories<br />

of learning and motivation as they apply to bilingual children.<br />

Students will be introduced to the general concepts of educational<br />

psychology specifically as they apply to bilingual education. Theories<br />

of learning and motivation, cognition, learning disabilities<br />

and cultural pluralism will be examined in the context of preadolescent<br />

development in an urban setting. In addition to class sessions,<br />

a two-hour-per-week field lab and a case study log are<br />

required.<br />

ELB103 Principles and Practices of Bilingual Education<br />

and ESL<br />

3 credits; 6 hours<br />

This course deals with a) learning theories and their implications<br />

for the bilingual child in his/her total school environment, b) a<br />

review of instructional approaches and teaching strategies which<br />

could be effectively used to educate bilingual children, c) the<br />

nature of first and second language acquisition as well as the<br />

materials for the teaching of language to transitional bilingual<br />

children.<br />

ELB200 Teaching Reading and Language Arts in the<br />

Bilingual Classroom<br />

3 credits; 6 hours<br />

This course surveys theories, practices, and materials in the teaching<br />

of language arts in bilingual programs. It includes examination<br />

of the interrelations of listening, speaking, reading and<br />

writing, as well as the influence of culture on language development.<br />

Coursework involves developing and presenting minilessons<br />

and designing a four-week language arts unit. In addition,<br />

students will evaluate materials and present written and oral<br />

reports. A three-hour weekly field experience is required.<br />

Prerequisite: ENC/ENG101, ELB103<br />
