This course will familiarize students with key works by Russian<br />

writers from the end of the tsarist monarchy to the present.<br />

ELS101 Elementary Spanish I<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This course for beginners is designed to develop listening, speaking,<br />

reading and writing skills through work in the classroom and<br />

the language laboratory.<br />

Prerequisite: CSE099, ENA/ENG/ESA099/ENC101<br />

Note: A student must successfully complete ELS102 before<br />

credit is granted for ELS101 Elementary Spanish I.<br />

ELS102 Elementary Spanish II<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, I lab)<br />

This is a continuation of Elementary Spanish I.<br />

Prerequisite: ELS101<br />

ELS103 Intermediate Spanish<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This course is designed to further develop language skills. The<br />

relationship among speaking, reading and writing is emphasized.<br />

Prerequisite: Exemption Exam<br />

ELS105 Spanish for Fluent Speakers I<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This course is designed to enable the native speaker of Spanish to<br />

master the intricacies of Spanish accentuation and spelling, to<br />

expand his/her vocabulary and to allow him/her to conduct a<br />

basic grammatical analysis of the sentence.<br />

ELS150 Skills Maintenance in Modern Languages<br />

1 credit, 2 lab hours<br />

This laboratory course is designed to maintain foreign language<br />

skills during an interruption in the study sequence. Individual<br />

instruction is directly related to student’s particular field of interest.<br />

Hours individually arranged.<br />

Prerequisite: CSE099, ENA/ENG/ESA099/ENC101<br />

ELS200 Latin American Literature I<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

This course deals with an introduction to Latin American literature<br />

and its relationship to the dynamics of social change. The<br />

course also traces the influence of European, North American,<br />

African and pre-Columbian elements on Latin American literary<br />

movements. Topics include pre-Columbian literatures, colonization<br />

and exploration, the wars of independence and abolition.<br />

ELS201 Latin American Literature II<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

This course is a continuation of Latin American Literature I. The<br />

second term deals with urbanization, social consciousness, alienation,<br />

black awareness and the new revolutions.<br />

ELS204 Latin American Civilizations<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

This course deals with an in-depth study of the peoples and cultural<br />

institutions of Latin America through the examination of<br />

selected topics such as caudillismo, machismo, mestizaje, honor,<br />

slavery and aboriginal traditions as reflected in different forms of<br />

literary and artistic expression. Students will learn to comment<br />

critically on Latin American civilization and to make significant<br />

comparisons with their own backgrounds and experiences.<br />

ELS205 Latin American Civilizations<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

This course deals with an in-depth study of peoples and cultural<br />

institutions of Latin America through the examination of selected<br />

ELS 209 Spanish Grammar and Usage<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

This course is designed as a descriptive study of the structure of<br />

the Spanish language, while offering writing practice through the<br />

analysis of lexical and morphological variations and differences in<br />

register in selected texts. Students will analyze Spanish syntax,<br />

increase their understanding of the structures of Spanish and<br />

develop stylistically correct prose. They will also be able to recognize<br />

dialectical variations, differences in register and linguistic<br />

calques. Taught in Spanish.<br />

Prerequisite: ENC/ENG101, ELS210<br />

ELS211 Spanish Literature 1<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

This course will familiarize students with the literature of Spain<br />

from the Middle Ages through the 1700. Students will read and<br />

analyze representative works of different styles, genres and literary<br />

periods selected every semester. This course is taught in Spanish.<br />

Prerequisite: ELS105 or Exemption Exam<br />

ELS212 Spanish Literature 2<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

This course traces the development of peninsular Spanish literature<br />

from Romanticism to the present. Students will learn about<br />

the thematic, stylistic and ideological characteristics of representative<br />

movements such as romanticismo, realismo, costumbrismo,<br />
