ELE140 Music Education in Early Childhood<br />

2 credits; 2 hours<br />

This course discusses the importance of including music in early<br />

childhood education for the full development of the individual<br />

child. Students research different models of early childhood music<br />

instruction and current best-practices in the U.S. Emphasis is given<br />

to the role of singing, playing, moving, listening, and recreation in<br />

the early childhood curriculum. Assignments include 5 hours of<br />

child observation.<br />

ELE141 Developing Creativity<br />

2 credits; 2 hours<br />

This course explores the artistic and creative development of children<br />

from birth to 8 years old. Focusing on the visual arts, the<br />

course provides an overview of how children make sense of their<br />

world and explore their feelings and ideas through art. Emphasis<br />

is placed on the development of the art curriculum in early education,<br />

basic teaching skills, guidance techniques and activities,<br />

equipment and materials appropriate for various ages and maturity<br />

levels, and diverse cultural perspectives. Includes 5 hours of<br />

child observation.<br />

ELE203 Language and Literacy in Childhood Education<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

This Writing Intensive course provides a comprehensive overview<br />

of the development, learning and teaching of literacy from kindergarten<br />

through grade six. Topics include the relationship between<br />

written and spoken language and oral language development in<br />

children in culturally, academically, and linguistically diverse<br />

groups, literacy assessment, emergent literacy, phonemic awareness,<br />

reading/writing fluency, reading comprehension, and literacy<br />

across the curriculum. Students must register for co-op internship.<br />

Prerequisite: ELL101, ELN120, ENG102, ESL/R099, MAT096,<br />

ELE204 Language and Literacy in Secondary Education<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

This Writing Intensive course is designed to promote students’<br />

understanding of the importance of issues concerning language<br />

and literacy in secondary education and their relevance to classroom<br />

practices. Students will learn about first and second language<br />

acquisition, dialects, discourses and other language abilities,<br />

communicative styles, language complexity, and strategies for<br />

teaching content-area material to a diverse student body. Students<br />

must register for fieldwork and reflective seminar.<br />

ELE205 Language and Literacy in Early Childhood<br />

Education<br />

4 credits; 4 hours<br />

This Writing Intensive course introduces students to language and<br />

literacy development of children from birth to 8 years of age.<br />

Coursework includes the development of language, pre-literacy,<br />

emergent and early literacy, the foundational role of early literacy<br />

learning, the importance of print-rich environments and intentional<br />

instructional practices, family literacy practices, and early<br />

learning guidelines and standards, among others. Students must<br />

complete 80 hours of child observation.<br />

ELE206 Family, School & <strong>Community</strong> in Early<br />

Education<br />

2 credits: 2 hours<br />

This course is an overview of current research and practice on the<br />

educational experiences of young children in the context of family,<br />

school, and community. Topics include the application of knowledge<br />

on cultural, racial, ethnic, income and linguistic diversity. The<br />

significance of family diversity, socio-cultural contexts, and urban<br />

poverty for early learning is addressed. Parent communication,<br />

involvement and collaboration are also explored. Course assignments<br />

include 5 hours of child observation.<br />

ELE211 Fieldwork II Bilingual Education<br />

1 credit; 6 hours<br />

This course introduces Bilingual Education students to advanced<br />

fieldwork in grades 1 to 6 in public schools. Students examine language<br />

and literacy instruction in bilingual education settings,<br />

focusing their observations on written and spoken language development<br />

in children in diverse groups; literacy assessment; emergent<br />

literacy; phonemic awareness; reading/writing fluency;<br />

reading comprehension; and literacy across the curriculum. 60<br />

hours of fieldwork are required. ELE203 and ELE215 are co-requisite<br />

courses.<br />

ELE212 Fieldwork II Childhood Education<br />

1 credit; 6 hours<br />

This course introduces Childhood Education students to advanced<br />

development in children in diverse groups; literacy assessment;<br />

emergent literacy; phonemic awareness; reading/writing fluency;<br />

hours of fieldwork are required. ELE203 and ELE215 are co-requisite<br />

courses.<br />
