Levi Wood, was born <strong>in</strong> <strong>New</strong> Scotl<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1842. Gideon Wood, his gr<strong>and</strong>father, was a native of Cape Cod, MA, born <strong>in</strong> 1778, a<br />

wheelwright by trade, <strong>and</strong> a manufacturer of sp<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g-wheels. He came to the town of Westerlo, <strong>Albany</strong> county, about 1806, <strong>and</strong><br />

devoted his time to farm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> the manufacture of sp<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g wheels. His wife was Jerusha Atk<strong>in</strong>s, by whom he had four children:<br />

Uriah, Arnold, Anna <strong>and</strong> Elizabeth. He died <strong>in</strong> 1861, aged 83 years. Arnold Wood, the father, was born <strong>in</strong> the town of Westerlo <strong>in</strong><br />

1806. He devoted his early life to teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> later followed farm<strong>in</strong>g; he removed to the town of <strong>New</strong> Scotl<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1836, where he<br />

became fairly well-to-do. His wife was Mary Spencer, born <strong>in</strong> Rhode Isl<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1806, <strong>and</strong> a daughter of Anthony, <strong>and</strong> a cous<strong>in</strong> of<br />

Senator Anthony Spencer. Their children were William, Levi, Ameha, Charles <strong>and</strong> Ann Eliza; the latter died when three years old.<br />

Arnold Wood died <strong>in</strong> 1891, <strong>and</strong> his wife resides <strong>in</strong> <strong>New</strong> Scotl<strong>and</strong> on the homestead with her son Charles.<br />

Levi Wood received a very fair education, attend<strong>in</strong>g the common schools <strong>and</strong> the <strong>Albany</strong> Normal. He rema<strong>in</strong>ed on the farm until he<br />

was 21. His first enterprise was the grocery bus<strong>in</strong>ess, which he established on the corner of Bear <strong>and</strong> William streets, <strong>Albany</strong>, <strong>in</strong><br />

partnership with Mr. Underbill, under the firm name of Underbill & Wood. Here he rema<strong>in</strong>ed for seven years; the four follow<strong>in</strong>g years<br />

were spent <strong>in</strong> Connecticut, engaged <strong>in</strong> the manufacture of paper, when he returned to <strong>Albany</strong> <strong>and</strong> aga<strong>in</strong> engaged <strong>in</strong> the grocery<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess at the same location, but this time for himself. He rema<strong>in</strong>ed here for eight years when he aga<strong>in</strong> embarked <strong>in</strong> the paper<br />

manufactur<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> <strong>New</strong> Baltimore, Greene county, NY. In 1892 he came to the village of Voorheesville <strong>and</strong> engaged <strong>in</strong> the<br />

mercantile bus<strong>in</strong>ess, which he conducts at the present time. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity. Temple Lodge No. 14 of<br />

<strong>Albany</strong>, <strong>and</strong> of the Odd Fellows, Voorheesville Lodge. In 1863 he married Harriet A. Mart<strong>in</strong>, born <strong>in</strong> <strong>New</strong> Scotl<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> a daughter of<br />

William <strong>and</strong> Mary A. (Moak) Mart<strong>in</strong>, <strong>and</strong> their children are Mary Ella, wife of Dr. W. F. Shaw of Voorheesville, <strong>and</strong> Frank W., with the<br />

National Express.<br />

Even<strong>in</strong>g Star Lodge (Masonic), No. 75.— The first Masonic lodge located <strong>in</strong> the town of Watervliet was known as Cl<strong>in</strong>ton Lodge,<br />

No. 202. The date of the charter of this lodge was 12 Dec 1811. It became <strong>in</strong>operative somewhere about 1818.<br />

A lodge known as Even<strong>in</strong>g Star, No. 466, was organized <strong>in</strong> that part of this village which was called Gibbonsville, <strong>and</strong> a charter or<br />

warrant granted, 10 Jun 1826. The follow<strong>in</strong>g named brethren were its first officers: Joseph Hayward, Master; Ira Holdridge, Senior<br />

Warden; Obediah D. Brown, Junior Warden. This lodge went out of existence, date unknown, <strong>and</strong> was revived by authority of the<br />

Gr<strong>and</strong> Lodge on 31 Jan 1840, John D. Willard, Junior Gr<strong>and</strong> Warden, <strong>in</strong>stall<strong>in</strong>g its officers as follows: Jacob G<strong>in</strong>grich, Master;<br />

Jonathan Hart, Senior Warden; Luther M. Tracy, Junior Warden; Wm. P. Lans<strong>in</strong>g, Secretary; Jacob Clute, Treasurer. At this<br />

<strong>in</strong>stallation Mr. Joseph Hayward, its first Master, was present.<br />

On 4 Jun 1840, the Gr<strong>and</strong> Lodge changed the "lodge number" of this lodge to 75. On April 12, 1854, this lodge surrendered its<br />

warrant, pursuant to a resolution adopted at a meet<strong>in</strong>g held for that purpose, the brethren hav<strong>in</strong>g been duly summoned. The officers<br />

at this time were as follows : Daniel E. Stewart, WM; George B. Frazer, SW; Lorenzo D. Coll<strong>in</strong>s, JW; John E. Glass, Secretary ;<br />

Morgan L. Taylor, Treasurer; Wm. McClellan, SD; John W. Fisher, JD, <strong>and</strong> John Christie, Tyler.<br />

The present organization of this lodge dates from 4 Mar 1864, at which time Gr<strong>and</strong> Master Cl<strong>in</strong>ton F. Paige issued a dispensation to<br />

the brethren at West Troy to form a lodge, to be known as "Even<strong>in</strong>g Star," <strong>and</strong> subsequently received a warrant, dated 17 Jun 1864.<br />

The follow<strong>in</strong>g were its first officers: Daniel W. Talcott, WM; Wm. Andrews, Jr., SW; Geo. F. Milliman, JW; Alex<strong>and</strong>er McAllister,<br />

Treasurer: John H. Fitchett, Secretary; R. G. Smith, SD; Charles H. Fort, JD, <strong>and</strong> William Fox, Tyler.<br />

The Gr<strong>and</strong> Lodge <strong>in</strong> June, 1864, adopted the follow<strong>in</strong>g resolution:<br />

Resolved, That the Even<strong>in</strong>g Star Lodge, U. D., be permitted to receive <strong>and</strong> work under the dormant warrant of a lodge once known<br />

as Even<strong>in</strong>g Star Lodge, No. 75, <strong>and</strong> to be hereafter hailed <strong>and</strong> known as such number.<br />

This lodge has been <strong>in</strong> successful operation s<strong>in</strong>ce the date of its present organization, 8 Mar 1864. This lodge has been unfortunate,<br />

as <strong>in</strong> Jun 1865, its lodge room, with all furniture <strong>and</strong> records, were destroyed by fire, <strong>and</strong> aga<strong>in</strong>, <strong>in</strong> Dec 1870, its lodge room,<br />

together with all its elegant furniture, etc., met the same fate.<br />

In connection with the Even<strong>in</strong>g Star Lodge, <strong>in</strong> 1871, was organized a chapter of the Royal Arch Masons, known as Hudson River<br />

Chapter, No. 262, the first officers be<strong>in</strong>g as follows: Albert Tayer, High Priest; Alfred W. Richardson, K<strong>in</strong>g; Charles L. Mather,<br />

Scribe; Geo. B. Mosher, Treasurer, <strong>and</strong> Henry C. Kelsey, Secretary.<br />

WARRANT: The first warrant for Even<strong>in</strong>g Star Lodge was granted June 10, 1826.<br />

This warrant was declared forfeited by the Gr<strong>and</strong> Lodge 5 Jun 1834.<br />

It was revived 31 Jan 1840, <strong>and</strong> on June 6, 1854, it was surrendered.<br />
