For many years Dr. Witbeck was health officer of Cohoes <strong>and</strong> his terms of office were full of more than ord<strong>in</strong>ary labor <strong>and</strong><br />

responsibility as twice the city was visited by epidemics of smallpox. Efficient relief measures <strong>and</strong> promptness <strong>in</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>g both crises<br />

revealed Dr. Witbeck's splendid executive ability as the danger was quickly averted under his charge.<br />

He was identified with many organizations <strong>and</strong> as an officer <strong>in</strong> several had been frequently honored. He was dean of the Cohoes<br />

Hospital faculty, president of the Cohoes Hospital staff, <strong>and</strong> was a member of the staff of lecturers <strong>in</strong> the school of nurses. Dr.<br />

Witbeck was also a member of the American Medical Association, <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> State Medical Society <strong>and</strong> <strong>Albany</strong> <strong>County</strong> Medical<br />

Society; the Holl<strong>and</strong> Society of <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> <strong>and</strong> Cohoes Lodge No. 116, F&AM. He was also a member of the Reformed Church <strong>and</strong><br />

for a number of years had faithfully served his church <strong>in</strong> the office of elder.<br />

The funeral was held at 2.30 o'clock on the afternoon of Saturday, May I5th, from the late residence <strong>and</strong> thence at the First<br />

Reformed Church. The local medical fraternity <strong>and</strong> the hospital nurses attended the funeral <strong>in</strong> a body, as also delegations from the<br />

Hospital Association, <strong>and</strong> Cohoes Lodge No. 116, F. <strong>and</strong> A. M. The bearers were Edward D. Ronan of <strong>Albany</strong>, C. J. Metcalf of<br />

Troy, Henry A. Strong, James S. Clute, John Bullock, Egbert Lans<strong>in</strong>g, Charles Douglass, William P. Adams of Cohoes. He was<br />

<strong>in</strong>terred <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Albany</strong> Rural cemetery.<br />

Resolutions of respect <strong>and</strong> appreciation of the doctor's life <strong>and</strong> work, <strong>and</strong> of sympathy to his family, were passed by the Board of<br />

Directors of the Cohoes Hospital Association, by the local medical profession, by the hospital medical staff, <strong>and</strong> by the Medical<br />

Society of the county of <strong>Albany</strong>.<br />

The first meet<strong>in</strong>g place of the Lodge was <strong>in</strong> the second story of the build<strong>in</strong>g on the corner of Mohawk <strong>and</strong> Oneida Streets; the<br />

second place was <strong>in</strong> the Lans<strong>in</strong>g Build<strong>in</strong>g, corner of Mohawk <strong>and</strong> Factory Streets; the third place was <strong>in</strong> the Silliman Build<strong>in</strong>g on<br />

Remsen Street. In 1871 it moved to the Johnson Block on Remsen Street, where it rema<strong>in</strong>ed until the fire, which destroyed its<br />

quarters <strong>in</strong> August, 1884. The next place of meet<strong>in</strong>g was <strong>in</strong> Odd Fellows Hall, rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g here until December 11, 1896. In the<br />

meantime the Lodge had purchased property on Remsen Street, upon which the Masonic Hall was erected. The corner-stone of this<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g was laid by M.'.W.'. JOHN STEWART. August 21, 1895; it was dedicated by R.'.W.'. JOHN F. SHAFER. Past District<br />

Deputy Gr<strong>and</strong> Master, December 15, 1896.<br />

The Lodge was present at the lay<strong>in</strong>g of the corner-stone of the State Capitol at <strong>Albany</strong>, the <strong>County</strong> Build<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>Albany</strong>, the Masonic<br />

Temples at Troy <strong>and</strong> Lans<strong>in</strong>gburgh: also at the lay<strong>in</strong>g of the corner-stone <strong>and</strong> the dedication of the Home at Utica.<br />
