Walter Andrew Bachteler, b. 1927 <strong>in</strong> Watervliet; d. 2 Feb 2009, age 82, a son of the Frank H.<br />

Bachteler <strong>and</strong> Louisa S. Sallans, <strong>and</strong> was a graduate of Watervliet High School. Walter was a resident<br />

of Latham for all of his adult life. He was employed by the State of <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> <strong>in</strong> Sep 1949 <strong>and</strong> retired<br />

25 Feb 1982 as a draftsman <strong>and</strong> civil eng<strong>in</strong>eer with the State Department of Transportation. Dedicated<br />

to Freemasonry, Walter was well known <strong>in</strong> local Masonic circles. He was a member <strong>and</strong> Past Master<br />

of the Even<strong>in</strong>g Star Lodge No. 75 F&AM, Past Master Councilor, Past Advisor <strong>and</strong> Chevalier of Troy<br />

Chapter, Order of DeMolay, Past Honored Dad of Ionic Triangle, member <strong>and</strong> Past High Priest of<br />

Hudson River Chapter No. 168 RAM, Past Illustrious Master of Bloss Council No. 14 R&SM, Sir Knight<br />

of the Apollo Comm<strong>and</strong>ery No.15 K. T., Past Comm<strong>and</strong>er’s Association of the Knights Templar of<br />

Central NY, member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Troy, Past District Deputy Gr<strong>and</strong> High<br />

Priest of the Tenth Capitular District of <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> State, Past Worthy Patron of Wiletta Chapter No. 213<br />

Church <strong>in</strong> Watervliet. Walter was <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> Scout<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> was a former assistant Cubmaster (Pack 62), Scoutmaster (Troop 62)<br />

<strong>and</strong> Troop Chairman <strong>in</strong> Latham. He was a Scout<strong>in</strong>g Unit Commissioner <strong>and</strong> District Committee member for Colonie District, Gov<br />

Cl<strong>in</strong>ton Council, BSA. He was a brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow, Nischa Nimat Lodge. Walter enjoyed life-guard<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> was an authorized Senior Life Savor <strong>and</strong> Water Safety Instructor for the <strong>Albany</strong> Chapter of the American Red Cross. He was a<br />

member of the NYS Association of Transportation Employees <strong>and</strong> was a former Representative of the Civil Service Employees<br />

Association. In retirement, Walter enjoyed home-life, family, read<strong>in</strong>g, solv<strong>in</strong>g crossword puzzles, collect<strong>in</strong>g stamps <strong>and</strong> co<strong>in</strong>s, driv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> travel<strong>in</strong>g, especially to Canada <strong>and</strong> Germany. He was blessed to see the arrival of his first great-gr<strong>and</strong>child. He was the<br />

beloved husb<strong>and</strong> of the late Hilda Karlson Bachteler; lov<strong>in</strong>g father of Walter Bachteler, Jr. of Philadelphia <strong>and</strong> Hilda “Heidi” Galster<br />
