this deponent the day follow<strong>in</strong>g. In the campaign of 1778 the only year that he was ordered to be with the Gr<strong>and</strong> Army under the<br />

immediate comm<strong>and</strong> of General Wash<strong>in</strong>gton. He was <strong>in</strong> the Battle of Monmouth <strong>in</strong> the state of <strong>New</strong> Jersey on the 28th of June<br />

1778, <strong>and</strong> that he was cooped up at <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> Fort Schuyler now called Rome for upwards of two years where sundry skirmishes had<br />

taken place. Dur<strong>in</strong>g that period, <strong>in</strong> the campaign of eighty one, he was <strong>in</strong> the Battle of Johnstown near Johnson’s Hall aga<strong>in</strong>st Major<br />

Ross of the British Army. We took there 37 or 39 British read [red] coated Soldier prisoners. In pursu<strong>in</strong>g of him through the<br />

wilderness for five days successfully up the West Canada Creek when Capta<strong>in</strong> Walter Butler of the British Army was Sla<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> at<br />

least 10, 12 or 15 of his soldiers. After their cross<strong>in</strong>g the West Canada Creek 20, 30 or perhaps 40 miles from the German Flatts <strong>in</strong><br />

the then <strong>County</strong> of Tryon but now Herkimer, <strong>and</strong> he this deponent on his oath farther says he is <strong>in</strong> the decl<strong>in</strong>e of his life half bl<strong>in</strong>d<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> reduced circumstances at present <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>s <strong>in</strong> need of the assistance of his country for support <strong>and</strong> that he has no other<br />

evidence now <strong>in</strong> his power of his said services but the old revolutionary soldiers <strong>and</strong> other Citizens on the Mohawk River who many<br />

be <strong>in</strong> the l<strong>and</strong> of the liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> the commission hereunto annexed. (Signed) Andrew F<strong>in</strong>ck<br />

was married there 21 Jun 1770 to Sarah MacIntire. She was born at Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield, MA, 10 Sep 1746; died at West Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield, MA, 2<br />

Jun 1808, daughter of William, Jr. <strong>and</strong> Sarah (Leonard) MacIntire.<br />

Samuel resigned his office <strong>in</strong> the 3rd Massachusetts Cont<strong>in</strong>ental L<strong>in</strong>e on 9 Feb. He is mentioned <strong>in</strong> Heitman’s as serv<strong>in</strong>g as a Major<br />

<strong>in</strong> the Massachusetts Militia <strong>in</strong> 1782.<br />

He wrote his will 9 Jan 1813 <strong>in</strong> which he mentions “my military implements of war” which were valued at $26.00. His sons Alfred <strong>and</strong><br />

Henry were assigned as dual executors of his estate. His real estate hold<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong>cluded 134 acres <strong>in</strong> West Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield, <strong>and</strong> 7½ acres<br />

<strong>in</strong> Southwick, MA. His entire estate was valued at over $6,500. Samuel <strong>and</strong> Sarah are buried at the Feed<strong>in</strong>g Hills Cemetery,<br />

Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield, MA.<br />
