ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS<br />

Environmental problems in the <strong>Watershed</strong> have been well documented by the<br />

<strong>Watershed</strong> <strong>Project</strong> and the Alabama Natural Heritage Program. The majority of the<br />

water quality problems can be attributed to agriculture, construction, unpaved roads,<br />

inadequate or malfunctioning septic tank systems, and increased urban development.<br />

Activities that result in a concentrated discharge into surface waters are referred to as<br />

“point source discharges” and include discharges from municipal wastewater<br />

treatment facilities and industrial sites. There are no point sources that discharge<br />

directly into <strong>Weeks</strong> <strong>Bay</strong>; however, several point sources discharge into the Fish River<br />

and <strong>Bay</strong> Branch, a tributary to Fish River. The Town of Loxley’s municipal<br />

wastewater treatment system (secondary treatment, 3-celled lagoon system,
