V. STRATEGY FOR PROTECTION<br />

The goal of the <strong>Weeks</strong> <strong>Bay</strong> <strong>Watershed</strong> <strong>Project</strong> is “to improve and maintain water<br />

quality in the <strong>Weeks</strong> <strong>Bay</strong> <strong>Watershed</strong> to meet or exceed Alabama water quality<br />

standards for waterbodies classified as Swimming and Fish and Wildlife.” Fourteen<br />

objectives have been developed to assist the <strong>Watershed</strong> <strong>Project</strong> in meeting this goal.<br />

The fourteen objectives have been divided into the following management<br />

categories: nonpoint source pollution, habitat protection and restoration, growth<br />

management and infrastructure, and management plan implementation and<br />

evaluation. A summary of the objectives follows:<br />

A. Nonpoint Source Pollution<br />

1. Reduce nonpoint source pollution from agricultural activities.<br />

2. Reduce nonpoint source pollution from construction and land<br />

clearing activities.<br />

3. Reduce nonpoint source pollution from residential sources.<br />

4. Protect ground water resources through a reduction in nonpoint<br />

source pollution.<br />

5. Reduce the pollution generated by water-related recreational<br />

activities, including sewage, petroleum products, and litter.<br />

6. Continue <strong>Weeks</strong> <strong>Bay</strong> Water Watch monitoring and formally analyze<br />

data to identify trends and design recovery plans if necessary.<br />

B. Habitat Protection and Restoration<br />

Ensure protection of fish and wildlife habitat, including submerged<br />

grassbeds, fringe marsh, shorelines, and other wetlands and upland forest<br />

through land acquisition, education, and incentive programs.<br />

C. Protection, Growth <strong>Management</strong> and Infrastructure<br />

1. Reduce pollution from existing and future on-site sewage systems.<br />

2. Promote planning and zoning that will protect environmentally<br />

sensitive areas.<br />

3. Identify unpaved roads that contribute sediment to the <strong>Watershed</strong><br />

and work with the county government to develop a plan to improve<br />

these roads within a reasonable time frame.<br />

4. Reduce water pollution from urban stormwater discharge sources,<br />

including residential subdivisions and commercial areas.<br />
