TAKE ACTION to prevent injury Information Sheets Background Goal ACICR began updating its TAKE ACTION to prevent injury information sheets in 2005/2006. Each sheet contains quick facts on a particular injury topic, a message inviting people to take personal action to prevent injury and easy to implement injury prevention actions. The new topics added to the collection are motor vehicle collision, adult bike injuries and distracted driving. The sheets are available on the ACICR website or hardcopies may be requested by contacting ACICR. To increase the public’s awareness of the injury issue and the ability to prevent injuries. Objectives 1. TAKE ACTION sheets will meet stakeholders’ needs. 2. Data will be current. 3. Information on prevention will be based on sound sources and, where possible best practices. 4. The public will find the sheets clear and understandable. Status Contact Ongoing. Goal 3: Identify, examine and strategically respond to injury issues at all levels. ACICR Community Injury Control Fund Background ACICR believes that it is the people who live, learn, work and play in a community who best understand their community’s specific problems, needs, assets and capabilities. Meaningful collaboration at the local level has proven to be the most effective way to identify and mobilize resources to create effective, comprehensive, coordinated and sustained action on injuries. With funding from Alberta Health and Wellness, ACICR launched the Community Injury Control Fund (CICF) in the fall of 2000. The CICF provides $250,000 a year in grants to support Alberta groups that want to make their communities safer. The purpose of the CICF is to stimulate and support local collaborative action to increase public awareness and reduce the frequency and severity of injuries within Alberta communities. The CICF is not intended to duplicate or replace the excellent work that is already going on in many Alberta communities. Rather, it is meant to build on, enhance and strengthen existing efforts and to stimulate new activity. Goal The goal of the CICF is to improve the well-being of individuals, increase individual and community safety, and reduce intentional and unintentional injuries by assisting communities with resources to undertake solutions to local injury problems. Objectives 1. Mobilize community groups and organizations to identify and address the leading causes of injuries in their communities through sustainable, multisectoral collaboration and coordinated planning and action. 2. Build and strengthen the capacity of organizations and communities to develop, deliver and evaluate initiatives that increase injury awareness and reduce the incidence of injury in their communities. 3. Improve coordination, focus efforts, fill gaps and reduce duplication of injury prevention initiatives in the community. 4. Encourage communities and organizations to share injury prevention strategies and results with other organizations and communities in order to improve knowledge of injury issues and to share possible models for replication or adaptation of successful projects. 5. Fund injury prevention projects to a maximum of $12,000 with the expectation of in-kind and financial support from the community and other sources. Status In Cycle 8, 22 grants were approved for projects that are completed or underway. Cycle 9, (2008-2009) funding is available as of April 1, 2008. Grant application deadlines are June 2 and November 3, 2008 for Larger Grants. Smaller grant applications may be submitted at any time.
