Submission to the Advisor on Healthy Children and Youth Background Goal Objectives Status In May 2007, the ACICR was invited to participate in a roundtable discussion lead by Dr. K. Kellie Leitch, Advisor for Healthy Children and Youth to provide Canada’s Minister of Health with information on existing programs and new initiatives that can directly impact the health of Canada’s children and youth. To increase awareness of childhood injury and the intervention used to impact the injury problem. To raise the awareness of injury as a major health concern for Canada’s children and inform the federal department of health about the work of the ACICR through the preparation of a written document and participation in a roundtable discussion. The report from this consultation entitled Reaching for the Top: A Report by the Advisor on Healthy Children and Youth was released in April 2008 and features the development and implementation of a National Injury Prevention Strategy for children and youth as the first of five key recommendations. To develop a five year strategic action plan by an Aboriginal Working Group that focuses on community capacity building for injury prevention. Objectives 1. To formalize the Aboriginal Injury Prevention Working Group. 2. To identify strategic actions targeting the four areas of the Model. Status Underway with expected completion date March 30, 2009. Goal 4: Increase access to promising and best practices through evaluation, research and knowledge translation activities. Canadian Collaborating Centres for Injury Prevention Background The CCCIP, formerly the Canadian Collaborative Centres for Injury Prevention and Control is a collection of provincial injury prevention centres from across Canada and national injury prevention organizations, which discusses and acts on common challenges and joint ventures to reduce and control injuries and to enhance the safety of the population. Goal To build and maintain a network of prevention related Centres across Canada. Objectives 1. Create consistency and reduce duplication of injury issues and initiatives. 2. Enhance the ability of regions to learn from one another (in areas such as evaluation, surveillance and research). 3. Act as a conduit for input and a dissemination route from both the national and regional perspectives. 4. Work collaboratively on injury prevention and control issues from a regional and provincial perspective. 5. Support the development of a critical mass of injury prevention and control stakeholders that together can make a significant impact on injury prevention and control. 6. Influence the national perspective. Status Ongoing.
