Alberta Spinal Cord Injury Collaboration Initiative Background Goal In the summer of 2002, the Canadian Paraplegic Association (Alberta) initiated a process aimed at building a shared vision and collaborative strategies to address the needs of Albertans living with spinal cord injuries. A 12 member steering committee was established which included representatives from a variety of backgrounds. Develop and implement actions aimed at improving service delivery to persons with spinal cord injuries in Alberta. Objectives 1. To identify key issues and shortfalls in services, including advocacy, for people with spinal cord injuries. 2. To provide a forum where decision makers, service providers and consumers can collaborate on a vision, strategic priorities and future directions. 3. To foster enhanced working relationships and strategic alliances between the providers of services to persons with SCI and consumers. 4. To establish a process that supports ongoing planning and collaboration between providers of services and persons with spinal cord injuries. Status CPA and stakeholders implementing recommendations. Alberta Traffic Safety Fund Background In June 2006, the Board of Directors of the Alberta Traffic Safety Foundation voted to dissolve the foundation in favour of a more accessible and responsive grant program managed by the ACICR. The Alberta Traffic Safety Foundation Board members all agreed to remain involved with the new grant program as members of the grant application Review Committee. The new grant program is called the Alberta Traffic Safety Fund. The Alberta Traffic Safety Fund (ATSF) strives to improve the quality of life in Alberta communities through preventative, collaborative and focused traffic safety initiatives. The purpose of the ATSF is to encourage community groups and organizations to develop and implement innovative traffic safety programs where they work best—at the community level. The fund specifically focuses on funding small community traffic safety and traffic injury prevention projects. The ATSF aims to help build community capacity with the nature and scope of the projects that are funded. Goal To increase individual and community safety by preventing traffic collisions and by addressing specific traffic safety issues in Alberta communities. Objectives 1. To mobilize community groups and organizations to identify and address the leading causes of motor vehicle related injuries in their communities through sustainable, collaborative, coordinated, community-based planning and action. 2. To build and strengthen the capacity of organizations and communities to develop, implement and evaluate initiatives that increase traffic safety awareness and reduce the incidence of motor vehicle related injury in their communities. 3. To improve coordination, focus efforts, fill gaps and reduce duplication of traffic safety initiatives in the community. 4. To encourage communities and organizations to share traffic safety strategies and results with other organizations and communities to improve knowledge of traffic safety issues and for possible replication or adaptation of successful projects. 5. To fund projects that would not achieve funding through other traditional avenues to a maximum of $10,000 with the expectation of support both inkind and financial support from the community and other sources. Status In 2007, the ATSF approved and funded 10 traffic safety projects. For 2008/2009 larger grant (to $10,000) application deadlines are February 1 and October 1. Smaller grant applications (to $4,000) may be submitted at any time.
