Injury and Fatality to Older Farmers in Canada Background Objective Status Older farmers are a high risk group for farm injury and fatality. The average age of farm owner-operators in Canada is approximately 55 years, thus any research that can inform prevention is warranted. To develop two reports, one on fatality and one on injury that compares the circumstances of injury for older farmers to their younger counterparts. The fatality report is completed and the injury report is near completion. The aim of this report was to identify individual, farm and machinery characteristics associated with serious work-related farm machinery injury. Objective 1. To examine individual characteristics, such as previous personal farm injury, low level education, farm experience, safety training and farm machinery injury. 2. To determine farm machinery associated with serious injury that does not meet current standards. 3. To determine design changes that could be devised to prevent injury and reduce severity and injury. Medical illness, medication use and suicide in elderly people: A population-based case-control study Background Objective Status Older persons, particularly males are of high risk for suicide. There has been relatively little work examining medical and medication use factors that precede the suicide. Data linkage techniques allow us to look back in time to determine what patterns of health care utilization existed. To examine the co-morbid conditions and medication use prior to suicide for a ten year period and compare the pattern to non-suicide controls. Goal To complete a culturally sensitive community-based “action” research project on drinking and driving, family and history for young people aged 18-29 in the First Nations communities of Saddle Lake, Beaver Lake and Frog Lake. Objective 1. Provide the research participants from each community an opportunity to express their realities of the problem and to search for “what ought to happen?” within the community. 2. Offer participants the opportunity to organize a local interest group, whose members will work together to improve their communities dealing with drug and alcohol abuse and impaired driving through involvement with local health boards, schools, law enforcement and mental health (local counseling) centers. 3. Empower the participants to inform and educate local First Nations political leaders of the problem from an insider perspective and collaborate with them to seek funds so that they can establish local care facilities and/or programs. Status • Phase 1 completed and article published. Phase 2 underway.
