Seeking Improvements to Alberta’s All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Program

Status
The rate to which children and teens under 16 years of age are killed in ATVrelated
incidents is of particular concern in Alberta. While in Canada children
and adolescents account for 25% of deaths due to ATVs. In Alberta they account
for 38%.
To reduce the number of children injured and killed on ATV’s.
To bring the problem of ATV-related deaths to the attention of injury prevention
partners and policy-makers in Alberta by developing a position statement which
builds on the Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) Position statement on ATVs
and disseminating the evidence-based recommendations included in the position
statement.
A new, more detailed position statement has been created regarding ATV’s and
is posted on the ACICR website under Advocacy. Currently, the ACICR is
disseminating the recommendation via ACICR communication vehicles and
through strategic meetings with policy-makers. At its 2007 AGM the Alberta
Public Health Association adopted a resolution to promote the CPS
recommendations regarding ATVs.
