Annual Site Environmental Report for 1999<br />

Abstract<br />

The Paducah Site often conducts investigations of various m'ecJia that are not part of the routine <strong>environmental</strong><br />

monitoring program. Relevant results are reported in the ASER. In 1999, the Paducah DOE Site Office<br />

participated with DOE Headquarters and U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) officials in various <strong>environmental</strong><br />

sampling activities. The. data collected are relevant to <strong>environmental</strong> monitoring and <strong>environmental</strong> restoration<br />

program activities reported elsewhere in this document.<br />

DOElDOJ investigation<br />

Beginning in August 1999, the Paducah<br />

DOE Site Office participated with DOE<br />

Headquarters and U.S. Department of Justice<br />

(001) officials in various <strong>environmental</strong><br />

sampling activities conducted to assist<br />

investigators in determining appropriate actions<br />

as a result of recent lawsuits concerning the<br />

Paducah Site. This effort was ongoing through<br />

the end of 1999 with a limited amount of<br />

sampling in January 2000 (Figure 10.1).<br />

Although data collected by DOE<br />

Headquarters and DOlwill not be provided due<br />

to issues associated with pending 'lawsuits, data<br />

collected during the investigation activities by<br />

the Paducah DOE Site Office are available for<br />

integration with other data from current<br />

remediation activities, During these<br />

investigations the' 'Paducah DOE Site Office<br />

collected split samples resulting in 41 sediment<br />

samples, two sludge samples, 26 soil samples,<br />

16 groundwater samples, 12 surface water<br />

samples,and two waste water samples. These<br />
