When installing <strong>seals</strong> on stepped <strong>shaft</strong>s where<br />

the shoulders do not have the recommended<br />

chamfer or rounded transition, a mounting<br />

sleeve as shown in fig 53 must be used. If the<br />

sealing lip has to pass over grooves, threads or<br />

gearing, thin-walled mounting sleeves of the<br />

type shown in fig 54 can be used to prevent<br />

the lip from being damaged. The outside<br />

surface of the sleeve should be coated with the<br />

same lubricant as the seal and counter<br />

surface.<br />

Radial <strong>shaft</strong> <strong>seals</strong> made of silicone rubber<br />

should always be installed using a mounting<br />

sleeve.<br />

When a seal is to be mounted at a certain<br />

distance in a cylindrical opening in a housing,<br />

the tools should be according to fig 55 and<br />

fig 56. The dimensions needed for designing<br />

the tools can be supplied on request.<br />
