District 6440 Histories 2005<br />

of baseball with the Schaumburg Flyers, was planned during my term but actually accomplished in<br />

early August <strong>2006</strong>.<br />

• Participated in “Rotary Sox Night”<br />

• Participated in a Chicago Bulls “basketball night” with the Barrington Noon Rotary Club.<br />

• Established “Rotarian to Rotarian” presentations at our weekly meetings.<br />

• Pushed very hard to upgrade the weekly meeting. Established a firm calendar of guest speakers with<br />

an emphasis on “learning something new” at every weekly meeting. Encouraged a very wide variety<br />

of topics, and reduced number of not-for-profit presentations. Emphasized use of technology during<br />

the weekly meetings.<br />

Community Service<br />

• Sponsored the 4 th Annual Barrington Community Kite Fly<br />

• Major participation in Barrington Fourth of July Brat Tent<br />

• Supported the Ela Township Food Pantry<br />

• Supported the Barrington Township Food Pantry<br />

• Supported “children at risk” in District 220<br />

• Was a major sponsor and participated in the Barrington Relay for Life (American Cancer Society)<br />

• Sponsored a highway cleanup on US Route 14<br />

• Major sponsor for the Barrington Tree House Project, an elevated, handicapped-accessible tree house<br />

overlooking Cuba Marsh<br />

• Purchased Lego Robotics kits for District 220 elementary schools<br />

• Major participation in the District 220 Speech Tournament (judges)<br />

• Sponsored “English as a second language” program for adults at Sunny Hill School<br />

• Purchased special PA systems for D220 to improve classroom learning<br />

• Developed special projects to benefit single parents (vehicle maintenance, minor remodeling)<br />

• Developed, sponsored and completed the first Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)<br />

training in the Barrington area<br />

• Major support for “Beds for the Needy”, a local program which provides mattresses to those in need<br />

• Provided major volunteer support for the Illinois Fatherhood Initiative writing contest<br />

• Major financial support for “Turn the Page”, a Barrington based not-for-profit which recycles books<br />

and sends them to rural libraries that cannot afford to buy new books<br />

International Service<br />

• Helped sponsor an inbound exchange student from Ecuador<br />

• Hosted several inbound Group Study Exchange participants from Japan<br />

• In conjunction with several other Rotary clubs, supported “Alliance for Smiles”, an effort by<br />

American doctors and nurses to help kids with cleft palate.<br />

Vocational Service<br />

• Sponsored several RYLA scholarships<br />

• Major financial support for the Barrington High School Interact Club<br />

• Sponsored vocational scholarships for graduating seniors at Barrington High School<br />

Other Items<br />

• Sponsored a major fundraiser (“The Rotary Masquerade”) that netted $40,000. Included a special<br />

“auction” to provide holiday gifts to needy kids in District 220.<br />
