District 6440 Histories 2005<br />
Service Projects, of Rotary Clubs and districts;<br />
and, the 3-H: Health, Hunger and Humanity<br />
program sends volunteers and funding for lifesaving<br />
projects in over 100 countries.<br />
As of <strong>2006</strong>, the Permanent Fund assets stand at<br />
close to $500,000,000 in cash and future bequests.<br />
Eventually as the assets grow the interest will pay<br />
for the various studies and work exchange<br />
programs.<br />
Monies received from <strong>Rotarians</strong> and their clubs<br />
for the Annual Programs Fund are generally held<br />
for three years before actual expenditures of the<br />
funds. Interest monies are then used to cover cost<br />
of planning and conducting the programs.<br />
Youth Exchange, now involving 7,000 youth each<br />
year, was initiated in 1929, with annual<br />
expenditure of almost $2,000, by each of the<br />
participating clubs, 75 countries involved to date.<br />
Other Programs:<br />
In 1947 Foundation Scholarships were granted to<br />
college graduates to spend a year in a country<br />
other than their own. As of 1995 these<br />
scholarships averaged $17,250 per student with<br />
964 participating and 28,200 granted to date with<br />
61 sending countries and 67 receiving countries.<br />
As of <strong>2006</strong> <strong>Rotarians</strong> have contributed almost<br />
$500,000,000 and provided scholarships to almost<br />
47,000 students. In 2005-06 731 scholars from 59<br />
countries studied in 60 countries.<br />
Matching Grants: 633 awarded in 1994-95,<br />
sponsored by 72 countries, for projects in 88<br />
countries, bringing the total number of grants to<br />
433,349. Over $28,000,000 has been awarded<br />
since the program's inception in 1964-65. In <strong>2006</strong><br />
there were 2,016 new grants approved and $33.1<br />
million dollars awarded.<br />
1965 - Group Study Exchange Program, in which<br />
four or five non-<strong>Rotarians</strong> and one Rotarian<br />
leader, in a variety of occupations, visit another<br />
country for 4-6 weeks. There were 500 teams,<br />
involving 2,000 people, visiting over 100<br />
countries, at a cost of 5.5 million dollars in 1995<br />
year; total expenditure of 50 million dollars since<br />
its inception, with 5,500 teams, involving over<br />
29,500 individuals, in 100 countries. In 2005-06<br />
the GSE program awarded $3.9 million dollars to<br />
over 500 teams.<br />
1979 - Rotary Volunteers Program, in which<br />
professionals, (usually dentists and physicians),<br />
contribute 4-6 weeks time assisting in a<br />
developing country. This year 237 volunteers are<br />
involved, 2,000 since inception, serving in 93<br />
project countries.<br />
1979 - Health, Hunger and Humanity, (3-H),<br />
includes two new projects this year, at a cost of<br />
$600,000, 287 projects since inception, at a 74<br />
million dollar cost.<br />
1983 - Rotary Foundation Benefactors gives<br />
<strong>Rotarians</strong> the opportunity to include the<br />
Foundation in their wills; 71,318 Benefactors<br />
have included the Foundation in their wills, to<br />
date.<br />
1985 - University Teachers volunteer their time<br />
and talent in developing countries at a cost of<br />
$750,000, between 1985-95, with 20 sending<br />
countries and 31 receiving countries. An<br />
additional 24 were awarded for study in 1995-96.<br />
191 grants were approved in 2005-06 representing<br />
93 countries. In October of 2005, this program<br />
was retired and renamed Volunteer Service<br />
Grants.<br />

<strong>2006</strong> - Polio Plus - $595 million committed to<br />
date. Two billion children have been vaccinated<br />
against Polio and other diseases, to date, in 111<br />
countries; 144 countries reported no cases in<br />
1994. As of January 2007 there are only 5<br />
countries in which indigenous polio remains.<br />
