District 6440 Histories 2005
1993-94 – Frank J. Schwermin, District Governor
***
Rotary International President Bob Barth in selecting his theme for our year said, “You can go
beyond what people expect from you as a person and as a Rotarian. When you BELIEVE IN WHAT
YOU DO, and DO WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN, you will give the highest expression to what our Rotary
wheel stands for and to what it means to serve. By letting your dreams guide your actions, your actions
will turn your dreams into reality.”
We started our year on March 5, 1994 with a pre-PETS get together in the conference area at the
Episcopal Church in Highland Park. It was well attended. The formal PETS meeting took place on
March 30 at the Moraine Hotel in Highland Park. The meeting was hosted by the Rotary Club of
Deerfield and very well attended.
The installation of the new Governor was held at the Country Squire restaurant in Grayslake. The party
was hosted by the Rotary Club of Highland Park; the master of ceremonies was Richard Jensen from the
Rotary Club of Elgin.
The District Assembly was planned to occur at R.I. Headquarters in Evanston. The headquarters hastily
scheduled an important meeting, and we had to find a new meeting place. The Assembly was finally
held on May 12 at the Holiday Inn in Crowne Plaza in Northbrook. The Rotary Club of Highland Park
hosted it. It was well attended with 430 registered, representing 61 clubs. The principal speaker was
Diane Swonk, an economic analyst with a major bank in Chicago.
District Computer Bulletin Board. District 6440 Rotary Clubs now have the ability to access and post
information on the District Bulletin Board, which went on line November 10, 1993. Each club was
asked to designate an individual or individuals who have a computer and modem to act as the club’s
Information Committee.
On November 19-20, 1993, a conference was held to discuss the part Rotary was to play in a coalition of
many clubs, churches, organizations, etc. to help inoculate all children up to two years of age for various
diseases. The project involved all clubs in the District and is considered a Community Service Project.
Group Study Exchange. A team of five traveled to District 9920 in New Zealand and Fiji March 10
through April 16. Team Leader, Charter Member of the Wilmette Harbor Club, Diane Teska.
Scholarships. District 6440 continues sending and receiving scholars around the world.
Rotary Youth Exchange. The District continues to participate in the Central States Youth Exchange
Program, which is a successful endeavor. Extra effort was given to stimulate the short-term exchange
program.
The ABC Information Seminar that was held in the R.I. Headquarters building was well received and
well attended.
